How To Make It Through The Winter

I have never been a cold weather person. I was born in the summer, and I have always preferred summer over any other season. Each year, when the cold weather months roll around, I experience a sense of dread. The cold weather is one thing, not to mention the layers on layers that must be worn in order to survive. I mean, bundling up so much that you feel like a marshmallow is really not my idea of fashion.

My friends have come to know me as the girl who complains for what seems to be hours on end about how cold it is. I don't know about anyone else, but I also feel a lack of motivation to do anything whether it is walking from my dorm to the library, venturing out to get food or even going out on the weekends. Although the winters are rough, here are some things that help make it tolerable:

Warm drinks and food.

Hot chocolate time is here, and you bet that I will drink it every night. My idea of a great night is burying myself under blankets with hot chocolate piled up with whipped cream. Hot soup and all the other comfort foods under the sun are also a great way to feel better about how cold it is outside.

Big sweaters and cozy scarves.

OK, I have to admit that one of the only things I love about winter and the cold weather is the fact that I can finally break out my coziest clothes. In the winter time, I am rarely seen not wearing some sort of oversized, soft sweater and scarf. Did I also mention sweatpants?

Snow (sometimes).

Snow is always beautiful to look at while it is falling, and even when it is fresh and untouched on the ground. Sledding, skiing, snowboarding or any other winter sport is also fun. If it is going to be cold outside, you might as well have it snow! Although, when it starts to melt and get slushy, then it can get annoying—especially if you have to walk around in it.

Knowing that spring is coming in a couple months.

When all else fails, the fact that spring is the next season to roll in should be enough to keep you going. Just think: spring break and spring break trips.

And everyone knows that after spring break, summer comes faster than you can even say the word winter. Until then, stay warm and imagine yourself on a beach in Hawaii; at least that's what I'll be doing.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
