Every year countless Americans make New Year’s resolutions, which turn out to not be met or are done halfway. Oftentimes people decide that their resolutions weren’t worthwhile or do not have the motivation to complete it properly. I have five tips for you in making your resolutions lasting.
1. Make your resolutions specific. When deciding what your New Year’s resolution is it is important to write down your goals with specific dates, times and vocabulary in order to keep yourself focused on what you want to do. Also, if you place your resolution on a sticky note on your desk you will be constantly reminded of the goal at hand which will increase the likelihood of accomplishing it.
2. Try to make a resolution with a friend who wants to accomplish the same goal. If your goal is to exercise more often or eat healthier you will oftentimes find friends who have the same resolution. Thus, if you team up with your friend and serve as another motivation and monitor, you will progress more quickly and will achieve your goals.
3. Try making monthly goals, that way you are able to achieve your goal in small chunks of time. If you have one large goal that is split up into 12 pieces, you will feel like you are able to accomplish more since you are going through a new phase each month. Also, you will be more likely to complete your resolution if you have monthly expectations leading you to want to complete it.
4. Remind yourself of why you set this resolution in the first place. It is important to remember the reasons behind your goal, whether it is to be more active, get certain grades, etc. The motivation is what will keep you going in the long run.
5. Stay disciplined. Discipline is key. It is important to keep focused on the task at hand.
Enjoy your New Year's and remind yourself that you can accomplish whatever you put your mind to!
