How I Met My Big

In sororities, you hear the term “big” and “little” and you automatically think back to the Pinterest boards of crazy costumes and gift ideas. But in reality it’s much more than that, it’s your honorary best friend. Many girls stress out over this part because of not knowing who they will get. I’m here to tell you, everything will work out in its own way and you’ll discover your big will be exactly who you need them to be. Here is my story of how I met my Big:

There I was, that awkward freshman PNM who was running on 4 hours of sleep due to lack of sleep from sisterhood the night before. Full of nerves, I sat under the big white tent with all the PNMs who you “pretended” not to talk about each sorority they were going to visit that night. In the murmurs you hear bits and pieces of what you were about to walk into. My party was called to the houses, and I stood there, palms sweating, trying to remember the basics: Chin up, smile, shoulders back, make eye contact, and ask questions. Soon after, we inched closer inside to the double doors that would open to my potential new home. Everything was very ornate down to the black curtains that lined the room and twinkling lights that made the room glow. As I walked in, I was greeted by a girl named Autumn. Being double rushed, the girl in line behind me was seated right next to me. We all watched in awe as one of the active members sang a song to all of the sisters, starting to tear up as she did it, hitting you right in the feels. After that, Autumn sat back down and started speaking to us. I knew as soon as she opened her mouth that she had something special. She carried herself with dignity and high standards. She spoke in a way that made you want to be her best friend automatically. We talked about things like my hometown, what I did in high school, and what I liked to do for fun. We had many common interests that got us talking the entire time. Toward the end of the conversation, I asked her what sisterhood meant to her, she gave this explanation that was exactly the answer I’d been wanting to hear all week from the other houses. She was so genuine and made me laugh the entire time, I fell in love with how easy she was to talk and get along with. The night was soon over and I had to say goodbye, hoping that I’d be running back to this house for Bid Day.

It was finally bid day and I waited with anticipation to open my envelope revealing where my lifelong sisters would be, I tore open the envelope with all the excitement in the world to see the words “Alpha Gamma Delta” written in pretty gold lettering. I ran as fast as I could to the house, reaching Autumn who held the sign that said my name on it. I reached her and with all smiles she said “Welcome home.” The two words that melted my heart. I wouldn’t have felt so at home if it weren’t for Autumn. When I found out she was my big, I couldn’t have been happier. I knew she was the one, no one else. I knew she would be the big to take me to all my first fraternity parties, jam out with me during car rides, make me laugh when I’m feeling down, tell me how perfect I am all the time when I need to hear it most, and teach me how to college in general. I couldn't have asked for anyone better, Autumn was the one.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
