I was assigned a project in my advanced composition class that involved 3-4 hours of volunteer time, something that was new to me. I chose to do my volunteering at a local food bank called Friend Inc. because it was located right in town, and I drug my roommate along with me, promising her it would be a memorable experience.
To be completely honest, I had no idea what to expect and was nervous to go. Growing up, I was blessed to never have to need the services of a food pantry, so, until that day I had never stepped foot in one. I expected Friend Inc. to be a dull, depressing atmosphere full of sad people. This misconception was quickly put aside as soon as I was greeted by the friendly helpers.
Friend Inc. is located in the back of a carpet warehouse and resembles a grocery store with a produce section, frozen section and canned goods section. The volunteers stacked each section to the brim. I was shocked to see name brand cereals, snacks and treats, and ever fresh produce I had expected generic, unheard of foods.
As the clients entered the pantry with their shopping carts, choosing items from shelves just as they would at the store, I was quickly surprised. Friend Inc. is not dull and depressing as I thought it would be, rather, it’s filled with the joy of grateful clients and volunteers who are eager to help.
I had to volunteer for an assignment, however, I continue to go back and volunteer on my own because it was the most rewarding experience I have ever had. The grateful clients at Friend Inc. made it clear that they appreciated what was being done for them, and, watching people leave the pantry with carts filled to the top made me genuinely happy.
It’s important to know that Friend Inc. serves the whole community. Yes- that includes Kutztown students. If you, or someone you know is a student at Kutztown and is struggling to make ends meet, Friend Inc. would love to help you. Once a month, on a Thursday, the food bank opens and has a student day where students in need can come get food. All you need is a valid student ID. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and to spread the word to other students. It may not be visible on the outside, but, even our small community battles hunger every single day. By spreading the word, we can make a difference and make positive changes for our community!
You can contact Friend Inc. at 610-683-7790 for more information on how to sign up for the food bank, or, for more information on how to get involved.
