It’s that time of the year again when we at Fairfield University are still entrenched in the cold of the winter.
However, every few weeks or few days, there will be some strange fluctuation of temperature where it will change dramatically from 53 to 34 Fahrenheit, or even have that change occur in the same day.
It’s quite annoying, especially knowing that the end of the warm weather is a horrible drop back to the cold. The reasons for these changes are usually due to large changes in climate and wind patterns, so I’ll show you some of the ways to get through these swings in temperature.
I think that the most important thing to realize about these changes is to not immediately try to adjust to the new temperature. If you wake up, check your phone and see that it is going to be 55 F at noon, it does not mean that you can walk around in a T-shirt. It may not be that temperature in the morning or the evening, and your body hasn’t acclimated at all the new temperature. Even if things are getting hotter, it could still lead to chills during the day and even getting sick the next day.
Wearing your normal clothes that you have worn for the recent weather should be fine and keep you from getting sick.
The other main weather phenomenon that might happen is a lot of rain during the day. Staying dry is the best thing that you can do, but again, be sure to wear layers and not just rely on an umbrella to keep you out of the weather. Any clothes that are synthetic and can make the water roll off your body is preferable as opposed to fabric like cotton that will soak up the water.
I also recommend any shoes that are waterproof. They can be rain boots or anything more heavy-duty, and not something like canvas sneakers or moccasins. Rainy days are when I forgo trying to look stylish; I’m not out here trying to catch a cold just for a wet hair look.
The bottom line is that when the weather is fluctuating from the usual cold to rainy or hot weather, stick it out with things that will always keep you protected and warm. Things are not as warm as they may seem during this time of the year, and you should be aware of how your body can react to these changes.
People get sick during spring because of the pollen that’s added to the air. Likewise, drastic changes in weather over a week can have a similar effect on the body.
