Each year, 7.6 million companion animals enter shelters. Adopt an animal (young, bratty teenager, or old) instead of buying one!
1. You will save a little puppy, old dog, young kitten or old cat’s life.
I personally always believe in second chances. Second chances are important in life. Not for everyone, and not all the time. But, your shelter animal is one in 2.7 million pets who are euthanized each year.
2. As with humans, some pets are problematic.
But, most are not. Pets in shelters are often abandoned by their owners because of moves, divorces, etc.
3. Adopting a pet young or old, is cheap!
The neutering/spaying, micro-chipping and vaccine fees are included in the cost.
4. You help in the fight to get rid of puppy mills.
By adopting a pet from a shelter, you are providing less business for puppy mills. This is amazing because puppy mills treat dogs so poorly forcing them to live depressed lives in cages with little to no medical attention. Often dogs that come from puppy mills have many issues later on in life due to their terrible beginnings. But, how could you deny a rose that grew from concrete?
5. Potty training deterring you from adopting a puppy or kitty?
No worries, shelters are filled with older pets that are already house-broken! Your carpet and chairs will thank you.
6. They will appreciate you!
Often shelter pets will appreciate you and will be eternally grateful for your efforts.
7. You can pick the perfect personality for you.
Whether your search is for a cat or dog, the pet that complements you is out there. Stray dogs/cats are great dogs/cats!
8. Pets help with depression and anxiety.
Their presence is comforting. When you own a pet, there is always a listening ear and empathetic snuggle within reach.
9. Your pet will love you unconditionally.
It does not matter to them if you failed a test or broke a glass; they will still love you with all their being.
10. Shelters not only have cats and dogs, but some even have animals from mammals to reptiles.
There are many options when it comes to adopting a pet. You could go in looking for a blue eyed husky and end up with a hairless cat.
11. Your pet will help you become a more responsible person.
It is no secret that an animal is a lot of commitment. You will have to feed it, bathe it, take it on walks and most importantly, shower it with love and affection.
12. The ASPCA allows you to take your prospective pet for a test drive.
You will be a foster parent, which allows you to see if the pet is right for you.
Adopting a pet is a wonderful experience for all ages. Animals are innocent souls and many of them are put into less than happy situations. You can completely change an animal’s life by adopting it. Pets come in many different shapes, sizes, textures, colors and ages. The best one is out there and waiting for you!
