The day I got into college was a day I will never forget. It was a day where I would continue my education and knew I was taking my steps to growing up. As senior year came to a close I realized that I was on my way to a new life. I was leaving the city I had called for 18 years and going to a school where there was a completely new lifestyle. While the college I was going to was close enough to home when I needed to visit it was still a big thing going from one part of life to the other. Going to college especially one that has 35,000 people there from different states seemed to be a lot. Everyone had a different culture or some people already knew each other and I felt overwlemd. I seemed to have so many questions and I was afraid they couldn’t be answered.
Looking at the freshman who came to Alabama two and a half years ago to the current junior makes me realize how much has changed. College is designed to shape you into being a mature adult who is prepared for the future. I was lucky enough to see my brother go through college and how he managed to stay on top of what he needed to be and go through all his classes. The first few week of college left me with more questions than I had before left. When I arrived at college I was afraid that I couldn’t make friends or that people would look at me differently. As a freshman I explored different friend groups trying to find the right group that suited me but it seemed I couldn’t fine one. There were many times freshman year I would just go to my classes, study and just hang out in my room. It wasn’t until my neighbor pulled me out and said youre going to socialize with these peple and youre going to like it. Since that day I don’t know how to shut up. I owe that to my neighbor.
College has helped come out of my comfort zone and helped me become more confident in life. I have been able to approach people and start a conversation, something I was not as likely to do as a high school student. I have also found ways to be more productive as a college student. Instead of spending all my free time just watching Netflix or being with friends I try and do some studying fist and then hang out. I have learned how to prioritize my life in college and how to be on top of my life.
College has shaped me into a man who can go out and apply for internships and tell the world that I am ready. Whether I have learned them from teachers, other students or even just friends they have helped me in many ways. Receiving a little push from everyone to go outside of my comfort zone helped me build my confidence and help me act like an adult. The skills I have learned in college whether it is to prioritize my life, think things through or be aware of everything I have taken the step into being an adult and how to be prepared in life.
