Being a senior in high school has been different than I originally expected. I knew it was going to be fun, and it has been very fun... but I never really thought about how emotional it would be. In all honesty, it's hard to not feel like we are on a timeline. It feels as if the clock is ticking and this year is full of "lasts". Last proms, last high school sporting events, last time really being a kid. It's challenging not to think this way, because it's constantly being pointed out to us that we will be leaving oh so soon. And though the world of college is exciting and new, for many of us it's heartbreaking to think about letting go of what we know. For me personally, there have been many tears. I get emotional over things I never thought I would - even something as simple as weekly family dinner night. This article isn't intended to be depressing for other high school seniors, it's intended to be honest. Even though we are currently experiencing many "lasts", soon we will be experiencing many amazing new "firsts". But for now, I've learned to really savor the moment.
This year has been a year of reflection. Being a senior makes it easy to reminisce on our younger years, and how freshman year seems like it was just yesterday. Personally, I feel so much gratitude when I reflect on all of the amazing memories I've made with my friends and family. It's something about that countdown that can make you really live in the moment. I feel so grateful for my family, and I feel an even stronger connection to them now. The same goes for friends - your time together becomes that much sweeter. Petty issues feel less relevant because this is our "last year" all together, and many of us have clear views of what's really important and how we really want to spend this last year.
With all of this in mind, here are some things I am trying to do to make the most of my time as a senior:
1: EXPRESS GRATITUDE
If you are grateful for someone or want to thank them for friendship, kindness, etc. SAY IT! This may be one of the last times you get to say it in person for a long time.
2: MAKE MEMORIES
Say yes to plans, do things you've been wanting to do but have never gotten around to, make the most of everything! Make lasting memories that you can take with you.
3: SAY I LOVE YOU OFTEN
Whether it's to family, friends, a boyfriend/girlfriend, your pet... say it! It goes a long way.
4: ENJOY YOUR SCHOOL WHILE YOU'RE STILL THERE
Even though many high school seniors are completely over school, try and enjoy it while you can because you will definitely miss it.
5: KEEP FRIENDS AND FAMILY CLOSE
This change is hard for everyone! Your family and friends are likely experiencing their own emotions at the same time, so make sure to keep them close.
6: LIVE IN THE MOMENT!
