"Inspired, tasty, hip, funky, savvy" -Mario E. Figueroa.
Reasons why today is a great day to be in Houston (as always). Here are some things that one can experience as a Houstonian.
The iconic mural by Mario E. Figueroa.
1. Everyone talking about how cool Montrose is.
“Yeah man, this is where the young cool hipsters hang.” But, in all seriousness, a cool part of town. Does, #biscuitpaintwall ring a bell?
2. Diversity.
3. You’re usually on a freeway.
A poster child for sprawl, Houston’s population of 2.9 million, the nation’s fourth largest, is spread out over a massive area. The choice for connectivity between the masses was not bus or rail but rather, the automobile. The car is king in Houston.(team light rail!)
4. The Be Someone Bridge.
For anyone who wants to be anything! Despite modifications and vandalism over the years, the message stays strong.
5. Why is there a Mini Mt. Rushmore on the side of the freeway?
Casual.
6. Dallas.
The unexplainable rivalry. As a Houstonian I am obligated to make no comment on this and post no picture to describe this. It just is. And with that bullet train in the works Houston and Dallas are going to be more connected than ever.
7. Everyone talking to you about how cool Austin is.
These are probably the Montrose people too. We have a Hopdoddy’s in River Oaks now too.
8. Everything is so spread out.
Most cities have a central business district with a defined skyline. However, Houston has multiple skylines that are not close to each other at all. There is Uptown/Galleria, Downtown, Med Center, and--if you look on the horizon--a rising Memorial City and Energy Corridor Skyline.
Downtown
Medical Center. Look how far Downtown is from the Med Center!
9. Humidity.
10. Flooding.
From tropical storms to a virulent April shower, it rains pretty heavily around here and things can get pretty nasty.
11. Space City.
"Houston, we have a problem."
12. Galveston. The beach is about an hour away.
13. We Pray for Snow.
This was supposed to be a joke considering this is not a sign that you’re in Houston, but here is the 2004 Christmas Day “Blizzard." We were blanketed in the white stuff. Good times. Fingers crossed this winter?
14. Good food (Taste of Texas, Fogo De Chão, or good old Rudy’s).
15. Wild.
Head out to any of the large parks like George Bush or Memorial to see relatively untouched/restored nature.
16. Hosting the 2017 Super Bowl.
17. Revamp.
Houston is starting to change face, becoming a more vibrant city that can better accommodate it's vibrant and diverse population. Mass transit, graffiti murals, music festivals (like Free Press) and more parks are plans that come to mind.
