A Horse Isn't a Pet

Here's Why

A Horse Isn't a Pet

A horse is not a pet. Here's why:

1) A pet loves you without any purpose behind it. If you don't know what you're doing with a horse, it won't be kind to you. When I first got my horse, I will ill-advised to use a shank bit to control him and a tie down to stop him from slinging his head around. I had no idea what I was doing but he let me know that it was very unpleasant by throwing me onto hard dirt and rock which permanently injured my elbow. After learning the mistakes of my ways, I was trained in horsemanship and had my horse trained. Now I can ride him using no tack but a halter and lead rope.

2) A pet is completely domesticated, but a horse isn't. A horse is a wild animal that acts upon instinct. Even after having one trained, the horse will still have wild instincts such as an intense fight or flight response to anything that scares it or angers it. In order to have a horse, you have to understand how to recognize and respond to those signs of anger or fear before the horse takes off with you, throws you, or kicks another creature. Having a horse requires a great deal more understanding than a dog or cat would.

3) A pet learns after getting in trouble that they should not misbehave without intense disciplinary action. A horse is like a teenager with a bad attitude problem. If you don't give them reason to respect you, they will quite literally walk all over you. I'm not saying to abuse your horse, but it takes working the horse until you are sweating profusely with aching muscles before it will usually learn its lesson. You can't just spritz the horse with a spray bottle filled with water and expect it to listen to you.

4) A pet doesn't really reflect you unless you just coddle your pet without teaching it manners. A horse is as good as its rider, therefore the way your horse acts reflects your stature as a rider and/or trainer. You are a team. There must be a mutual respect present in order to really bond with your horse and become a team.

A horse isn't a pet, but it is a part of your family. It's a part of you and it teaches you just as much as you teach it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
