As Your Big Sister, These Are My Hopes, My Dreams, My Goals

I hope you know how much I love you, my dear baby sister.

When I was 5 years old, I was blessed with a baby sister. My parents said I begged and begged for a baby sister and that when she arrived I was obsessed with her. Want to know a secret? I still am, but I don't think she knows that. So here is my letter of hopes and dreams for my baby sister, Kylie.

Well, Kylie, I may have begged for you to get here when I was little but there have been the occasional times where I begged mom and dad to take you back. You have hit me, bit me, screamed at me, and caused me to cry, but to be honest, that's not what I think about when I think of you, my baby sister. Instead, I think of the laughs where we cried, the times we cook together, the games we played, the cuddles we share, and most importantly, the dance parties! Honestly, those will always be my favorite part of having a little sister.

You've taught me a lot, baby sis. You have taught me patience and sharing and empathy. And now as you go through high school as I have already done, I learn just how similar we are. Sometimes it's scary how similar we are.

Kylie, I want you to know how many hopes I have for you. I hope that you never let someone tear you down. I hope that you follow your dreams and be whoever you want to be. I hope you try your hardest at everything you do. I hope you find friends who make you laugh when I'm not there to do it. I hope you eventually (not now) find a boyfriend/husband who makes you a better person and treats you like the queen you are. I hope you get to see the world and find things that constantly amaze you. I hope you never fall into a routine of life that bores you. I hope you overcome every obstacle that gets in your path.

I hope you always want to see your big sister. I hope you never stop wanting to have dance parties with me. I hope you always feel comfortable to come to me for advice or help. I hope I am always your shoulder to cry on. I hope I can always make you smile. I hope you always want to vacation with me. I hope you call me as much as possible.

Most of all, I hope that I have been and continue to be a good role model for you. I hope that I have lived up to your idea of a good big sister. I hope that I have given you all you have needed so far. I hope you know how much I love you, my dear baby sister. I will love you forever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
