Why Homework Is Overrated

Homework this semester is burying me.

The growing problem when it comes to this school year is homework. When I say growing, I literally mean it is piling up. No matter how much us students do it. In my opinion, I think that the professors do it on purpose, because they do have meetings which discuss dates, how students are doing and the work in their classes.

So far this year at Lander University students have little to no down time. Our professors think our life revolves completely our school, when it does not. The professors are living proof of that. They will take forever to grade and/or post assignments but expect us as students to do so by a certain time. WE THE STUDENTS, are outraged and stressed to the max. And because of that, we give up a lot more easily. We feel as if we have no motivation to doing well in the class because of the large amounts of work.

An example of this is how they say, "Spend two hours on homework per every credit hour of class time". When in reality it is not feasible. Say you are taking 15 credit hours this semester (like myself), that equivalents to 30 hours or more. Now think if the student has a job or multiple jobs like some students I know do. More than likely it is part-time, but that still is between 20-30 hours a week. There are only 168 hours in a week so now you are down to 108, but you have to get a good sleep at night.

Another example is that my psychology teacher (which cancels class once per week), said to us, "For every three hours I expect nine hours of work spent outside of the classroom". Keep in mind that this is just for one class. I have four others. She usually cancels Monday's class, so we test on Wednesday's, and barely get to go over the slides in class for the next test. Basically what I am saying is that, I teach myself while she cancels our class (for our major), and I'm sure she does it in other classes too because every time I go by her office, there she is. I know that the students in my psychology class are pretty pissed because she expects so much out of us but we get little to nothing back from her, and she gets paid for it.

The second issue about homework this school year is regarding the due dates. Professors give us either too much time to do assignments and we forget or they do not give us enough time. Another possibility is that this semester most items are due on the same day or we have multiple tests per day. Which is rather difficult to study for. They expect us to remember, but what about when they forget to do things for us, the students?

We understand that this is college and sometimes there will be a literal ton of homework but this year so far is already going to far. Lander University if you are reading this, think of this in a students eye, college is expensive and we want an education and we will work for it, but do not overload us because in return it will remote to unhappy students and bad reviews about the University.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
