Moving back home with your parents after being on your own at college is often difficult and confusing. You’re technically an adult but suddenly you have new rules you must follow and your friends aren’t with you 24/7 anymore. However, there are several benefits to moving back home for the summer and it’s important to keep them in mind when you start to miss your college life.
1. Home Cooked Meals
After a year of eating the same food over and over again at your school’s dining hall, there’s nothing better than having one of your mom’s home cooked meals. And, if your school is anything like mine, you will have been deprived of fruit for several months. Lucky for you, there’s always plenty of fruit at home.
2. Pets Who Love You
One of the things I miss most when I’m living on campus during the school year is hanging out with my dogs. The best part about coming home is that your pets always want to hangout with you and snuggle. You’ve been gone for a while so they’re just happy to have you around again.
3. Your Own Bed
Dorm room beds aren’t always horrible but nothing compares to sleeping in your own bed and bedroom. Even better, you’re the only person who has ever slept in it. There haven’t been hundreds of students before you using the same mattress.
4. No Shower Shoes
For those of you moving home after living with communal bathrooms, this one should hit home. There’s nothing like taking a shower without shoes on and being confident that you’re shower isn’t full of germs.
5. Peace And Quiet
The first night home is always weird because when you lie down to go to sleep it is completely silent. There’s always some sort of noise on campus whether it’s students in the hallway or construction outside. But at home you’re free to sleep peacefully without any disruption. While this silence might be uncomfortable at first, you’ll learn to appreciate it pretty quickly.
6. No Homework
Summer is the time to catch up on your reading list and do things you haven’t had time to do during the school year. Since you don’t have homework, you have plenty of time to curl up in bed with your dog and read a novel for as long as you please.
7. Family Time
Of course family time comes with the territory if you’re living at home for the summer, but we don’t always appreciate what this means. For me it means watching movies with my parents and playing board games with my brothers. Whatever it is, be sure to spend some time with your family this summer. They’re excited to have you back under the same roof.
Moving back home isn't always fun and exciting, but just remember that your family and your pets are excited to have you back. There's an upside to every situation, even when you're moving home for the summer.
