I just recently finished my freshman year of college at Misericordia University. While I am glad to be home, I do have to say that it's a little weird. There are certain things you get used to at college and being home just messes them up. It's also the same with being home, college messed up a couple of things and now you are back home. This is a list of some of the best, weirdest, and different things about being home for the summer.
1. The Food
While at college, you often don't have to worry about making food because you just go to the cafeteria when you are hungry and they automatically feed you. Well, let me tell you, home is a different story. You actually have to either make your own food or patiently wait while your family cooks it. You also then have to take care of your dishes whereas at college, you just leave them for someone else to clean up. Food takes work, I mean it's still definitely worth it, but it takes work.
2. All of your friends from college are gone, but your friends from home are here.
When the school year ends it officially sucks that you have to say goodbye to all the friends that you made at college. It's so weird because you go home and the people that you have seen every day for the past couple months are just gone. On the bright side, all of your friends who went away to college are back home to which means you get to see them. It's almost like you live two separate lives with two separate people.
3. No one and nothing is in walking distance.
One of the nicest parts of college is that you can literally walk anywhere. You want to grab food, go to the cafe, you want to see a friend, just go knock on their door, you want to go to the gym, then just walk there and enjoy. Being at home means that you actually have to get in the car and drive to get to where you want to go. Nothing is as easily accessible and to be honest it kinda sucks. Who doesn't want to just walk down that hall and be able to see their best friend?
4. Family
I absolutely love my family, so coming home to them is amazing, but there are times when I also wish I was back in my dorm room. When you're at college you make your own decisions and you do the things you want to do; in essence, you're way more independent. When you come home your family wants to know what you are doing so you have to run all your plans by them and you also have new rules that may not have applied in college.
5. Work
Summer in college means absolutely no homework which is one of the best parts. You don't have to worry about anything but being home and enjoying yourself until August. The part that sucks is that now you're home you actually have to start working because if we are all honest college isn't going to pay itself. You think you're done with spending your days being busy, but in reality, you have a job that is going to take up just as much time as school did. Only upside is most jobs don't require you to do homework.
6. Home
If I'm honest I have to say living in a dorm is not the highlight of my life. While you try to make it feel like home it doesn't always give you that same feeling of comfort and safety that actually being home does. So when you walk into your room you finally feel "at home." I mean I love being able to go into my bedroom where nothing has changed since we've moved in and I love sleeping in a bed that doesn't require a foam pad on top to be comfy.
7. Showers
Let's be real. No one and I mean no one who goes to college misses wearing shower shoes. Going home and being able to take a shower without having to wear flip flops is fantastic. You also don't have to carry all of your soap to the shower because it's already there and you don't have to shower in what feels like a cubicle. You have a nice open shower where no one can judge you besides your family if you sing at the top of your lungs.
I love being home, but there are also some things that I miss about college. Each is absolutely amazing, but to be honest there's no place like home. I can't wait to go back to college and see all my friends, but I know that I will have a tough time leaving home.I hope that everyone back from college has a great summer and is excited to make the most of it.
