Thanksgiving break, y’all! It’s finally here! For many college students, Thanksgiving break will be the first time they have the opportunity to sleep in their own bed in months, the first time they can eat vegetables that aren’t drenched in dining hall oil and the first time they can visit with their families for more than a couple days or a couple hours.
While the theory of Thanksgiving break is beautiful, we often get wrapped up in upcoming finals, tests, essays and new friends, without remembering that Thanksgiving is a time to slow down and take in everything that you have been given. Instead of stressing out about upcoming grades, here are some things you can do with your family to make sure you capture every moment you can with them this week.
1. Have a movie night.
Nothing’s better than curling up with your family to watch a movie you all used to watch when you were a kid with a giant bowl of buttery popcorn and tons of blankets! Trust me, a movie night, whether you stay in or go out, is awesome.
2. Cook dinner with your family.
I never realized how stressful cooking dinner can be, maybe because I can’t even boil water. Instead of laying around waiting for your mom or dad to make dinner, offer to help. If you put music on and dance around in socks, it makes the burning smell of dinner just a little bit better.
3. Bake cookies (or a pie)!
If you’re anything like me, you start celebrating Christmas after Halloween. Literally, I start making gingerbread cookies in the month of October. Take some time away to bake cookies with siblings, or learn how to make a pie for Thanksgiving dinner. Not only will you get flour everywhere and learn how to make delicious cookies, but you might also actually have some fun doing it.
4. Go Black Friday shopping.
OK, so Black Friday actually gives me major anxiety. If you’re into large crowds and pushing, then Black Friday is a must. But if you loathe the idea, go anyway. You won’t regret it. It’s so much fun to go people watch, so grab your family, a cup of coffee, find a bench and enjoy the view.
5. Go ice skating!
Nothing says winter like an ice skating rink. Whether you’re coordinated or not, ice skating with your family is definitely a memory you have to make.
6. Just be.
This can be the hardest. In a world wrapped twice around by technology, it can be so difficult to put the phone down. But this is such a special time, a day to be truly thankful for everyone and everything in your life. Nothing says it more than putting down the phone, putting away the laptop and simply enjoying every memory you can make with the people who matter the most in this world.
