Ah, Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving where thousands of people flock to the nearest stores, boutiques, and malls to try and get their hands on this year’s hottest deals. For some, these deals include flat-screen televisions and wireless speakers. For others, the best way to spend on Black Friday is by donating money to dig a hole. Yes, you read that right. This year, the creators behind the Cards Against Humanity game decided to do something unique for Black Friday and a surprising number of people participated. The creators set up a website (www.holidayhole.com) and requested donations to fund their project to dig a hole. A live broadcast of the digging was streamed on the website, so both donors and anyone interested in watching the spectacle could see live footage. The final video available to view on the website now is approximately four hours long.
Below the video footage, the website displays a witty “Frequently Asked Questions” section which aims to address the questions that many people presumably had about the whole dig. According to the website, there was no “sort of deeper meaning or purpose to the hole” than simply the desire to dig a hole. The creators had promised: “As long as you keep spending, we’ll keep digging” (holidayhole.com), and apparently many people were satisfied enough with this guarantee that they did indeed donate to the project. The money was not donated to charity and donors received nothing in return for their financial contributions except “A deeper hole” (holidayhole.com). Apparently, this didn’t stop people. As of Sunday evening, the total amount of money raised for the dig was $100,573 (holidayhole.com).
The website now reads: "Okay, there's a hole now. Updates soon" (holidayhole.com). We will just have to wait and see what becomes of this $100,000 hole. Until then, check out the video of the dig!
