Families who live in different states always operate differently than families who live nearby. Seeing one another when life gets busy can be complicated and infrequent. When the holidays approach the stress of spending time with family builds. The way families spread out in different states spend the season is always unique. If you have family who live in different states, then you may relate to some of these things that happen around the holidays.
Spending each holiday in a different state.
Spreading the love around the holidays is always important. So you must be sure to visit each side of the family and share you love equally with all of your grandmas and aunts in different parts of the country. So Thanksgiving may be spent in California and Christmas will be spent in Minnesota.
Making holiday plans extra early in order to book flights.
You must decide which family you’re going to spend the holidays with because you have to book the flights early in order to get the best deals! While most people put off planning until November, your holidays are all planned out by August.
Not knowing some family members at holiday parties.
Being in different states, it can get difficult to get to know all of the family members. Sometimes at family holiday parties you have to be reintroduced to your mom’s uncle, you’re just now meeting your cousin’s wife, and you have no idea who the little children running around the party belong to.
Sending gifts out early so they arrive in time.
A lot of people get their Christmas shopping done early, but not everyone has to determine that specific date in which all of the gifts must be shipped by in order to arrive in the other state before Christmas morning. Not to mention that dreaded long line at the post office around the season and the costs of shipping all those gifts will clean out your wallet.
Not having a lot of holiday traditions.
Every year the plans for the holidays are different, so you don’t ever get attached to holiday traditions. This can be a good thing when you know that not every year you and your siblings have to take a photo in the matching sweaters your grandma knitted. But it can also be a downfall when you don’t get that one aunt’s perfect pumpkin pies each year.
Setting a time to Skype with family on the holiday.
There’s always that specific time, which works well with the different time zones, when you have to make a Skype call with family. The whole family crowds around the webcam to thank each other for the gifts or to wish each other a happy holiday.
Spending holidays with friends.
You find it easier and more enjoyable to just stay home and host a Friendsgiving. Now you can avoid a conversation about politics with your obnoxious uncle while you’re trying to enjoy your mashed potatoes. Always be thankful for Friendsgiving!
