I don’t know about you, but I love movies that are based off of real events and people. It makes them much more relatable; but, I am sort of a history buff, so that may contribute to my obsession. Just last year, seven of these movies were made. Here are just a few of the best history movies made within the last few few years.
Spotlight (2015)
This movie conveys the story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, bringing scandal to the entire Catholic Church.
The Finest Hours (2015)
This movie is a tale of a brave Coast Guard teams rescue attempt off the coast of Cape Cod after a pair of oil tankers are destroyed during a blizzard in 1952.
The Big Short (2015)
Four average joes predict the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s and decide to take matters into their own hands by exposing the big banks of America.
Woman in Gold (2015)
An octogenarian Jewish refugee named Maria Altmann goes up against the Austrian government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her and her family.
Bridge of Spies (2015)
During the Cold War, an American lawyer named James B. Donovan is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy, Rudolf Abel. His next job is to help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.
Everest (2015)
A climbing expedition on Mt. Everest is devastated by a severe snow storm and climbers struggle to get out alive.
The 33 (2015)
A gold and copper mine collapses in Chile it leaves 33 miners underground with 2,000 feet of rock in their way, trapped for 69 days.
American Sniper (2014)
Chris Kyle Navy S.E.A.L. sniper saves countless lives on the battlefield and his pinpoint accuracy turns him into a legend. Back home, his wife and kids feel that after four tours of duty, he just can't leave it behind.
Selma (2014)
This is the story of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights, including the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Marcus Luttrell and his Navy S.E.A.L team were out on a mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shah, in late June 2005. In the end, they were fighting for their lives and just simply trying to get home.
Lee Daniels’ The Butler (2013)
A great film about a butler named Cecil Gaines whom in his lifetime served eight presidents at the White House. During his time he had a first hand look and inside knowledge about major events affect American society.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)
Nelson Mandela's life journey packed into a film that described his childhood in a rural village, his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa, and his struggles along the way.
Lincoln (2012)
During the Civil War, a great American president struggles with members inside his own cabinet on the decision to grant the slaves their rightful freedom.
Argo (2012)
A CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1980 while acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer.
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
This film depicts the ten year man hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks in New York City. It describes the struggles within the ten years before his death by the hand of Navy S.E.A.L.s Team 6 in May 2011.
