Hillary Clinton has been involved in politics for many years. She began as the First Lady of Arkansas which led up to her role as the First Lady of the U.S. with her husband, Bill Clinton, as President. After fulfilling her role as First Lady, Hillary stepped into the spotlight as a political powerhouse. She served as the U.S. Senator for New York for eight years. Each of these positions served as a stepping-stone to her most recent position as the 67th U.S. Secretary of State.
Now, for the second time, Hillary Rodham Clinton is running the ultimate campaign, hoping to become the next leader of the “free world," President of the U.S. Hillary Clinton becoming the next POTUS would go down in History; she would be the first female President, as well as the first President to formerly hold the position of First Lady of the United States. Many Americans have supported Hillary’s campaign since her previous run and are all hoping that this is her time. If Hillary does earn the coveted spot, will she live up to the expectations that have been built? Her capability to be a great leader all depends on her stance on and plans of attack of the “big issues." Some of the biggest issues facing our country today are as follows:
College cost and debt
Costs won't be a barrier: The federal government will make a major investment in the New College Compact by providing grants to states that commit to these goals as well as cutting interest rates on loans.
Costs won't be a barrier: States will have to step up and meet their obligation to invest in higher education by maintaining current levels of higher education funding and reinvesting over time.
Costs won't be a barrier: Colleges and universities will be accountable for improving outcomes and controlling costs to ensure that tuition is affordable, and that students who invest in college leave with a degree.
Immigration reform
A fair and just immigration system: Every family should feel like they belong in this country. Instead of breaking up law-abiding immigrant families who have enriched America for years, Clinton will offer them a path to citizenship.Comprehensive immigration reform: The American people support comprehensive immigration reform, not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it strengthens families, our economy, and our country. Congress must pass comprehensive immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship, treats every person with dignity, upholds the rule of law, protects our borders and national security, and brings millions of hardworking people into the formal economy.
Gun Violence Prevention
Closing the “Charleston Loophole”: Hillary Clinton will push Congress to close the loophole that allows a gun sale to proceed without a completed background check within three days of the purchase date. This loophole allowed the alleged Charleston shooter to purchase a gun even though he had a criminal record.
Support legislation to stop domestic abusers from buying and possessing guns: Although federal law generally prohibits domestic abusers from purchasing or possessing guns, this protection does not apply to people in dating relationships or convicted stalkers. Clinton will fight for legislation to prohibit all of these domestic abusers and stalkers from buying guns.
Keep military-style weapons off our streets: Military-style assault weapons do not belong on our streets. They are a danger to law enforcement and to our communities. Hillary Clinton will work to keep assault weapons off our streets and supports reinstating the assault weapons ban.
The Armed Forces
Protected family members caring for wounded warriors: Hillary Clinton collaborated closely with Senator Chris Dodd to authorize and introduce new legislation that aims to broaden protections for families of wounded service members with the Family and Medical Leave Act. She is proud that the legislation was enacted as part of the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.Supported survivors of fallen service members: Working with Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Hillary Clinton sponsored legislation to expand benefits for surviving spouses. She and Republican Senator Chuck Hagel also introduced a bill to increase the gratuity paid to family members of fallen veterans from $12,000 to $100,000. The proposal was enacted as part of the 2005 supplemental appropriations act. Hillary also served as an honorary board member for the non-profit Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors which provides resources and support to family members of those who have died in military service.
Joined efforts to build veterans rehabilitation center. Hillary joined Republican Senator John McCain to personally raise money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Their efforts were critical for building the Center for the Intrepid, a new $50 million state-of-the-art physical rehabilitation facility in San Antonio, Texas. It is designed specifically to help seriously wounded service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Women’s Rights
Work to close the pay gap: Women earn less than men across our economy, and women of color often lose out the most. Clinton will promote pay transparency across the economy and work to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill she introduced as senator, to give women the tools they need to fight workplace discrimination.Fight for paid family leave: No one should have to choose between keeping their job and taking care of a sick family member, and no parent should have to go back to work right after they welcome their newborn baby. A quarter of all women in America return to work within ten days of having a child because they do not have paid leave. The U.S. is the only country in the developed world without guaranteed paid leave of any kind. That has to change.
Increase the minimum wage: The current minimum wage isn’t enough for Americans to meet their basic needs. Because women represent nearly two-thirds of all minimum wage workers, many women are living that reality every day. A higher minimum wage will help close the gender pay gap, lift millions of women out of poverty, and have a ripple effect across our economy. While we work to raise the federal minimum wage, Hillary Clinton will also support state and local efforts to go above the federal floor.
Protect women’s health and reproductive rights: Women’s personal health decisions should be made by a woman, her family, and her faith with the counsel of her doctor. Hillary will stand up to Republican attempts to defund Planned Parenthood which would restrict access to critical health care services like cancer screenings, contraception, and safe, legal abortion. She will fight to protect the Affordable Care Act which bans insurance companies from discriminating against women and guarantees 47 million women and counting, access to preventive care.
