High School vs College Life

Comparing the two back-to-back 4-year periods in people's life.

Leaving high school may scare everyone in it still; however, college is an experience that'll shape you into who you'll be when you grow up. Strangely enough, the real world doesn't care so much about who you were in high school. Here are some comparisons of HS to College life:

1. E-mails become the most used form of communication again.

Any questions/information your professor needs to ask you will be done over e-mail. A little bit different than thinking only "old people" still e-mail in high school. Plus, the bell dismisses you versus your teacher.

2. Greek Family becomes similar to your "home" family - except bigger.

Your closest siblings at home still exist, but you grow now as a person with your greek family in college. If you're an independent, your closest friends become your family as well.

3. Home becomes with people versus a certain city.

Your college town and hometown may feel like home, but soon you'll start to feel most at home in the presence of the people closest to you in your life -- regardless of where you are on a map.

4. No more living with your parents.

Independence begins, you're responsible for your own decisions.

5. Time gaps between classes.

Say goodbye to passing periods and hello to quick 30-minute naps after class once you enter college.

6. Social Hierarchy becomes more irrelevant the older you become.

In college you typically begin to spend time with people you genuinely enjoy being around, versus caring about an "image". Unless you're still stuck in high school, then you might still care.

7. Hook up culture becomes more real in college.

Not everyone has the best intentions with you the older you become; however, there's different people out there that you can find to value the same things as you.

8. Your metabolism does a 180 on you.

Eating whatever you want may become more of a challenge when you become older. Especially if you're transitioning from playing a sport in high school to college. Also -- those calories from going out won't burn off themselves!

9. You never realize how broke you are until you reach college.

Those textbooks aren't going to buy themselves, either. Financial responsibility comes along with freedom.

10. Be prepared to share your shower with your entire floor.

Which at times, may not always be the hottest. Shower shoes are a requirement or else you may not make many friends on your floor

11. You have a specific "lunch table" with your friends you sit at every day in high school.

Now, who you sit with depends on who has free time the same time as you -- and it may vary day to day.

12. Nobody will be holding you accountable anymore, it's on you.

Want to skip your class? Go for it. Want to go out every night? Do it. But you're the only person who will be keeping yourself in check in college. It's a little taste of the real world!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
