Things We Did In High School That We Don't Do Now

Things that just do not work in college.

Things We Did In High School That We Don't Do Now

My sister just started her junior year of high school, which is super exciting for her. As she got ready to go back, I remembered all of the cringy things done in high school before going to school for the year, that if we did now in college, we would certainly garner a few looks wondering what the heck is going on. High school and college are so different, but I can only imagine what would happen if a bunch of college students did some of these things.

Posted a picture of their schedule online and said "Classes?"

All of the screenshots of schedules with a caption "classes?" will be forever recognized as one of the cringiest things we did in high school.

This is a picture of my college schedule, which of course looks absolutely ridiculous with the word classes over it. The chances of one of my followers being in the same class as me without me already knowing that they were in the same class are slim. When I was in high school we didn't have Instagram Stories, so our schedules would sit there on people's feeds for days, waiting for comments. In high school, it makes sense to find out who's in your class in a way, but given assigned seating does it really make too much of a difference if your friend is in your class or not if you don't have last names alphabetically close to one another.

Wore uniforms

After 10 years of Catholic School, it was hard to figure out what to wear for my first day of class without khakis.

At my school, we weren't allowed to wear skirts, shorts, leggings, or dresses, or anything mildly related to what college students wear to class. We wore the same thing every day, a polo or sweatshirt and khakis. Granted, this made getting dressed in the morning easier, but nonetheless, it kept me from being able to pick out an outfit on my first day of college. I can only imagine what would happen if colleges adopted a uniform policy, or if we all wore the exact same outfit every day, a personal uniform of sorts. Take advantage of your friends in college who didn't wear a uniform, they will be able to tell you what school clothing is.

Sat in front of your locker because you got to school a half hour early.

Sometimes, when you got there before your friend, you wondered what possessed you to get to school so early.

At my school, almost everyone got to school early. I went to school early, and spent a half hour either finishing my homework, drinking coffee, or catching up with my friends. In college, people either show up early for class to make sure no one steals their unassigned assigned seat, or to make sure they can turn whatever needs to get turned in and then leave. Some people show up fifteen minutes into class. It just depends. Generally, if someone is in class a half hour early, their class before is an hour before, and they were trying desperately to kill time, but it was impossible to actually kill enough time. Pre-class social hour just doesn't exist.

Had a spirit week

There was always that one guy who just wouldn't participate in spirit week.

Now don't get me wrong. If you could get the entire campus to participate in spirit week, that would be pretty exciting. 40000+ people dressed up would be impressive. However, if you can't even get an entire high school to participate, there is absolutely no way to get an entire college to participate. That being said, you can get kind of close when you see some of the crazy things people wear at Purdue on Fridays.

Had two hour delays, and then fit the whole day into less hours

When you had already gotten up and ready for school, but you sat and waited until the last possible moment to get the phone call

There are no two hour delays in college. That's just a nice professor cancelling a morning class because it is too cold, too icy, too whatever. Now the problem with that, is the class falls behind, and many classes seem to be already behind if the professor spends more than two minutes discussing the class. At least, there is no campus wide two hour delay, and then you have to be in all of your classes for less time like they did in high school. However, we still sit there and wait until the very last minute to see if class just might be cancelled on ridiculously cold days.

Had a school dance

When your biggest fear was that someone was going to wear the same dress you have, and are you going to have a date?

Now some clubs, sororities, and fraternities have formals and semi-formals, but unless you are in those clubs or invited, you aren't going to a school dance. Purdue tries to have one, but from what I can tell, absolutely no one goes. There is not a school-wide dance for people to go to so they can dance the night away under the watchful eye of teacher and/or parent chaperones. There is no junior/senior prom, nothing like that. Personally, I liked school dances, but I can't say that a school dance in college would be the way to go.

Had announcements

I can only imagine what it's like only having announcements for five minutes.

At my high school, there were morning announcements which were the prayer and the pledge. The idea of 40000 people having to say the pledge at the same time is a little creepy and terrifying. Then there was the announcements period which was 20 minutes when some people ate lunch, but most stayed in their fourth period class to be talked at over the loud speaker. If there was an announcements period in college, it would be less than enjoyable, and there would either be absolutely no announcements or way too many announcements. It would be chaotic.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
