High School Seniors: Appreciate Your Pup

"A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself."

High School Seniors: Appreciate Your Pup

For those of you who have yet to venture into college yet, is it not your favorite feeling to walk in through the front door after school and hear the click clack of paws hitting the floor? All of sudden, you see a fur ball with a face running at you full force ready to shower you in kisses and welcome you home after an entire day of being separated. If you own a dog, you cannot lie and say this isn’t a daily routine. Unfortunately, at this very moment, if I were to see a dog it would be the first time in 2.5 weeks. So for all of you seniors I only have one thing to say: savor the time you have with your dog.

They are the only ones who will truly be there when you all you need is a cuddle. I am convinced dogs have a sixth sense and the ability to tell when you are sad or need them to just sit with you. This may just be me, but having my pup sit with me when I’m not in the best mood can do more wonders than if anyone else were to try and comfort me.

Don’t forget to appreciate the fact that you get to hang out with the cutest animal on this earth on a daily basis. You have the ability to be surrounded by a pet who will never stop loving you. You have got a pet who loves you with all of their being, and this is not something to brush off. You have got an animal who doesn’t care that you just made the largest mistake of your life: they still love you for you. They don’t see all of your imperfections and the things you don’t love about yourself.

Before college, there were a lot of things my dog did that I found to be annoying and bothersome to my day. She rang the bell to go outside —yes, my dog rings a bell to go outside— and then walked away as soon as you would reach the door to let her out. She begged like no other, and I constantly found myself eating dinner with a chorus of barking in the background. She would even decide that in the middle of the night there was a reason for her to bark at the wall. Yet at the end of the day, when I come back from class, I don’t walk into my room to see my own puppy coming to greet me. When I’m not feeling too hot or happen to be in a bad mood, I don’t have that one friend I want to sit with. I don’t have my dog. There is a list of things I wish I would have savored over the course of my pre-college life, but my dog is at the top.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
