But boy, could he ever be...
He’s got beautiful blue eyes that you swear could hold the entire ocean in them, and when you’re wrapped in his arms you feel like you could stay there for an eternity. You’re with him, and you’re at home. You swear you’re going to be with him for forever, and then forever ends only a few months later, and you’re sitting there asking how it all fell apart in the blink of an eye. Didn’t he say he would always love you? He’s the love of your life, what happened?
What happened was this: he wasn’t the love of your life.
I’ve only had one boy truly break my heart, and it happened early in my life. We were inseparable, a ‘he breathed, I breathed’ kind of relationship. The two of us swore it would last, and so did everyone we knew. And then six months later, it was over just as quickly as it had begun. And I was left wondering the same thing: “Isn’t he supposed to be the love of my life?”
The love of your life won’t make you feel like you’re not important. The love of your life won’t make you feel like you have to dress a certain way or act a certain way to keep his attention, and the love of your life definitely won’t treat you the way that boy is treating you right now. Now hear me out, the love of your life isn’t perfect either. He has his flaws, and so do you. But the love of your life will never pressure you to do anything you don’t want to do. The love of your life won’t intentionally hurt you. Days will come when you’ll feel like you don’t even have the strength to put air in your lungs. The love of your life won’t leave you on those days.
The love of your life will fight for you. The love of your life will hold you on the bad days and celebrate with you when your life is going so incredibly great that you can’t even believe your life is your own. The love of your life will think you hold the sun, the stars and the moon all in your hands. The love of your life will love you.
So stop settling. Stop settling for the boy who won’t even go as far as to lift a finger for you. Stop settling for the boy who you’ve been with for four years because you’ve just been with him for so long. Stop settling for the boy who makes you feel like you are anything less than all of the wonderful things that you are, and don’t you dare settle for the boy who can’t see that.
You weren’t made to settle. You were made for passion. You were made for fire and for ice, and the love of your life is just around the corner ready to embrace you and all that you are. The boy who just broke your heart, well he’s not the love of your life. Wait for the passion.
