Here's What!

Here's what 10 things I'm obsessed with this week.

Here's What!

I am definitely the type of person who goes through phases where I become easily and overly obsessed with things: whether its a fashion trend, a song, an author or even a saying. My obsessions usually hit hard, and when I find something new or rediscover something old that I love, I like to share those things with my friends.

Here’s what ten things I’m obsessed with this week!

1. The Drillfield. Could we have asked for a more beautiful start to the semester? After a long, rainy summer in Blacksburg, it seems as though the nice weather and the return of students brought the masses back out onto the Drillfield.

From time to time, I love to stop at the Pylons to take in everything that’s going on around the Drillfield.  Seeing students out and about, laying in hammocks under a shady tree, slack lining, playing pick-up soccer and ultimate Frisbee games and groups of friends enjoying lunch out on picnic blankets as opposed to overly crowded dining halls makes me so happy to be a part of such an active and interesting student body. I strangely even love seeing students parade across the new and old cement paths on their way to class.

There’s something comforting about seeing the Drill Field come back to life again with the help from so many students who are enjoying themselves and the beautiful campus that admittedly, I sometimes take for granted, but am equally as obsessed with.

2. The Return of the PSL. For those who know me, it probably seems like Starbuck’s famous Pumpkin Spice Latte is all I’ve talked about for the past week or so since it's return on the menu as one of the chain’s more popular seasonal drinks.

At the risk of sounding completely basic, when it comes to the PSL- I literally can’t even.

If the pumpkin flavor by itself isn’t your thing, you can purchase a pump of it to add in your favorite drink already on the menu and still experience that quintessential taste of fall.

While it’s still warm out, I’d suggest trying an iced chia or iced vanilla latte with the pumpkin syrup added.

If you’re a true PSL lover like me, follow Pumpkin Spice Latte on Twitter at @TheRealPSL for insight from the Pumpkin Spice Latte itself and share your PSL with me on social media using the hashtag PTL4PSL, meaning praise the lord for Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

3. Virginia Tech’s win over William & Mary. Game days in Blacksburg are always amazing, but there’s really nothing better than starting off the season with a win. It felt so good to be tailgating with my sisters and friends again and jumping to enter Sandman in Lane Stadium. Our fans got so hyped up, we even broke part of the north end zone stands while jumping. Can other schools say they’ve done that?

Also, considering both my parents are William & Mary graduates, this win was just a little more sweet…love you Mom and Dad!

4. Jalapeno Cream Cheese from Bruegger’s. Reason 103,593,950 I’m happy to be back on campus: bagels every day.

Where I’m from in Newport News, Virginia we don’t have any place like Bruegger’s or ABP other than Panera, which certainly isn’t within walking distance from where I live and obviously doesn’t take my Hokie Passport. While being reunited with Bruegger’s is slightly dangerous, my first bagel of the school year was everything I’d been dreaming of all summer and more. If you’re a bagel fanatic like me and haven’t tried Bruegger’s jalapeño cream cheese yet, you’re seriously missing out. It has just the right amount of kick to help wake you up in the morning and works with a variety of different bagel flavors the store has to offer.

5. Virginia-themed accessories. I feel like the new, trendy thing to do is to represent your state on your accessories. It’s kind of a sweet mixture of southern prep and state pride and I’ve seen these accessories come in a variety of different forms.

A few of my favorite Virginia-themed accessories include Virginia monogrammed laptop decals, which can be purchased for under $5 on www.etsy.com, hats, t-shirts, scarves and jewelry.

I just bought a really cute Virginia Tech themed scarf that is maroon with orange Virginias stamped all over it and another really cute gold necklace with the state as the pendent from Alumni Hall, a retail store located just off South Main by El Rods.

In addition to the state accessories, the store has pretty much all the Virginia Tech gear you could dream of, and the 10% discount given to students who present their Hokie Passport at the register is something to obsess over, too.

6. Fall-colored nail polish. I love when it’s time for dark nails again. There’s something classy about a deep red or black manicure, and I’m excited to start swapping my summer colors out for my falls.

Essie just debuted their fall 2014 line and it is, as always, perfection. I think black nails will always be one of my favorites, but I also love Essie’s new “Dressed to Kilt” and “The Perfect Cover Up.”

Head over to www.essie.com to check out their entire collection.

7. If I Stay by Gayle Forman. If you’re looking for a quick read, I highly recommend “If I Stay” by Gayle Forman. The book, which was just released as a movie as well, follows the main character, Mia, as she is having an out-of-body experience after her family is in a fatal car accident where she must decide if she wants to fight for her life or just let go.

While you most likely won’t find the tears flowing like they did when reading “The Fault in our Stars,” readers will still feel a strong emotional connection to the characters.

I read the book from cover to cover in about a day because it was so enjoyable but haven’t had the chance to check it out in theaters yet!

8. Freshmen. I know some upperclassmen act like to act like freshmen are the biggest inconvenience in the world, but their fresh faces and shiny sense optimism bring joy and light to my heart.

I really do love their naivety and how some introduce themselves to everyone and anyone at the chance that person could end up being their next best friend. I would just like to encourage all the freshmen and first year students out there to keep making that small talk with strangers, keep on wearing those lanyards and never stop looking both ways when you cross the Drill Field.

You only live through freshmen year once, and while I am thankful to be done with those awkward first few weeks around campus, they were some of the best times of my college experience.  So upperclassmen, let’s cut the freshmen a break. We’ve all been there.

9. Littles. For many girls, this is our first full semester together with our Little, and so far, I must say the experience is pretty great! Going out to dinner, hanging in my room, tailgating and jumping to Enter Sandman is so much sweeter with my perfect Little by my side.

10. Andy Cohen. My obsession with Andy Cohen will never falter. As a communication major, Andy serves as an inspiration for where I could see my career taking me if I work hard enough.

Similarly, everything from the facial expressions he makes when a Housewife says something stupid during a reunion special, to the Instagram account he made for his dog, Wacha, entertains me so much, that if I could make my living on being Wacha’s personal assistant, I would drop out of school now and move to the Hamptons to do it.

So many of my favorite party catch phrases originated from watching Andy on Watch What Happens Live, like yelling, “drinking game alert, any time you hear anybody say….” while motioning up to an imaginary word that should have popped up on my imaginary screen, and saying “would you like to plead the 5th?” when something awkward happens. Even this article was inspired by Andy's segment, "Here's What!" on Watch What Happens Live.

So Andy, I know you’re on summer vacation, but it’s time for you to come back on air now. I miss you too much.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
