Between the ending of the school year, coming home from a long year away and the thought of starting those summer jobs and internships, these first few weeks of summer can seem like a lull. If you have texted a friend, “What show should I binge-watch on Netflix?" recently, you are certainly not alone. Here's a go-to guide of shows that will hopefully satisfy what you've been looking for.
A Political Show That Everyone Talks About.
Show: "House of Cards"
Summary: "House of Cards" is a Netflix original series, starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, set in present-day Washington, DC. It showcases Spacey's character, Francis Underwood's hunger for power and will leave you on the edge of your seats. The show features ruthless corruption, betrayal and a desire for power, so to me, it's just like a normal day in the Starbucks line. The only disappointment thingabout this show is that the fourth season doesn't stream on Netflix until 2016. That leaves you plenty of time to catch up on the first three seasons this summer!
Drama or Humor?: Definitely drama. There are a few jokes between the lying and deceit though.
Can you watch with your parents?: I would recommend no unless you're comfortable enough with yourself to watch your parents watch Kevin Spacey get it on.
Dad Humor.
Show: "Louie"
Summary: "Louie" is a comedy show written by comedian Louis C.K. who also stars as the main character. "Louie" is loosely based on the life of C.K., showcasing the highs and lows of being a middle-aged, newly divorced dad living in New York City. "Louie" covers all topics including parenting, divorce, sex and aging and never fails to make you laugh, unless you just got your wisdom teeth out because laughing hurts too much. Plus the intro will make you want some pizza.
Drama or Humor?: Humor, because the show is about a comedian, duh.
Can you watch with your parents?: My dad is pretty cool and used to be a comedian, so he'd probably be chill with it. For the rest of you guys, I'd probably pass unless your parents are really chill.
Show with a mustache, Aziz Ansari and takes place in Indiana
Show: "Parks and Recreation"
Summary: Although "Parks and Rec" has just finished its run, you're missing out if you have yet to see it. This unreal cast, from Amy Poehler to that girl who was on "The Office" and dated Jim for a minute (Rashida Jones). This show will honestly make you laugh, even when you feel down, just because someone is picking on Jerry/Garry and not you in that moment. From peppy and enthusiastic Leslie to frightening, but caring, April, this show has a person everyone can relate to.
Drama or humor?: If you don't laugh while watching this show, you hate happiness.
Can you watch with your parents?: I'm going to give this one the green light.
Documentary That Will Give Your Life Meaning
Movie: "Living on One Dollar"
Summary: Chances are, if your main worry is what to watch on Netflix, you are fairly well off. I recommend taking the time, 56 minutes in fact, to learn about something, in this instance, world poverty. This documentary is about four college students who travel to rural Guatemala for two months and live off of one dollar a day, learning the hardships of staying healthy and providing care for others. This documentary shows you the power of the human spirit and what young people can do to ripple change across the world.
Drama or humor?: Neither—a documentary about triumph.
Can you watch with your parents?: Please do. And encourage them (and yourself) to do more.
Haven't Seen It Yet and You're Missing Out
Show: "Orange is the New Black"
Summary; If you are like I am and are just realizing the magic of "Orange is the New Black," you have some Netflix to catch up on. We are way behind and need to make up for lost time. If you don't pay attention to anything ever, "Orange is the New Black" is a Netflix original about a well-off New Yorker who gets thrown in jail for a crime she committed over ten years ago. The show will no doubt make you laugh, but tackles areas that are not as talked about such as suicide, sexuality and crime. So believe me, the hype is incredibly real about this show.
Drama or humor?: Little bit of both.
Can you watch with your parents?: Sex scenes galore but if you're cool with it, then that's your call.
Hopefully you've found something on this list that will satisfy your need to watch while you are laying in bed. If it didn't, feel free to watch Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" music video until you can master the knife throwing skills like some of the characters.
