Everyone knows about the negative connotations you get from holding your $7 Venti Americano from Starbucks as you stroll to your morning class. “Classic white girl," they might say. But put a little pep in your step and let the haters be your motivators. Not only does coffee taste amazing, but it also contains various health benefits that affect different body organs.
Here's a little sneak peak of how that black, mysterious liquid cleanses the body, mind, and spirit of the soul.
1) Replenish With Antioxidants: Coffee is known for being the number one source of antioxidants in the United States. And luckily, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee both provide the same levels of antioxidants. What's the big deal about antioxidants? Antioxidants do many things, ranging from fighting diseases to protecting memory and reducing the symptoms of aging. So raise your mug and yell "cheers." Coffee makes you healthy, smart, and beautiful.
2) No Type 2 Diabetes: Recent studies from the Harvard School of Public Health have shown that “increased coffee consumption may reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes," and researchers at UCLA say, “Drinking coffee increases plasma levels of the protein sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). SHBG controls the biological activity of the body's sex hormones which play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes." If you don't care for what all of that means, just close your eyes, sip on your coffee, and relax because your chances of getting Type 2 Diabetes are decreased.
3) Say Bye to Parkinson's Disease: Researchers in the United States have found that “higher coffee and caffeine intake is associated with a significantly lower incidence of Parkinson's disease." Also, a study published in the journal Neurology states that caffeine in coffee may help control movement in people suffering from Parkinson's disease. I don't know about you, but I would much rather drink coffee everyday then raise my risk of getting a fatal neuro-degenerative disorder.
4) Prevent Liver Cancer: Researchers in Italy have found that coffee consumption lowers the risk of liver cancer by about 40%. And if you drink three cups a day, the risks are reduced more than 50%. This is extremely important because you cannot live without your liver -- which is why it's called the “liver." So protect your liver and drink coffee daily, but don't forget that less alcohol consumption is good for your liver as well.
5) Strengthen Relationships: Most people in this world have gone out to coffee with someone for a first date, interview, meeting, etc. at one point in their lives. Coffee shops are known for their chill atmosphere that also makes it a great place for studying, which is why my nursing friends and I practically live there. All of this just shows that coffee is love; coffee never brings any harm. Unless you spill it all over yourself, which is why the Starbucks cup warns you that “Contents May Be Hot."
