Ah, 2016, the year of instant gratification. We as a people want everything now at the snap of our fingers, and we want to put in minimal effort to receive results. This also includes personal health and fitness.
Now, I am no expert but I have had a fair share of wonderful personal trainers, and I have been passed down knowledge from my parents, which has greatly impacted me on my journey to success with my health.
I remember a specific instance when I was a freshman in highschool, and I came hopping down the stairs with news for my parents about a totally rad diet I had found (which STILL circulates on the Internet).
"Mom, Dad!" I screamed "I'm going to lose 10 POUNDS in one week!" I literally couldn't contain my joy.
My parents both looked at me with concern in their eyes and proceeded to explain to me that the secret behind this "fad," was starvation. And after you finished starving yourself for a week, sure you'd see results, but you'd gain back everything you lost and then some once your body readjusted and realized it isn't dying.
Disappointedly, I went back to my room to sulk. But WHY couldn't I lose 10 pounds in ONE WEEK?
Because that is wildly unrealistic.
The journey to weight loss and muscle gain (trust me, I've been on this journey since I was 13 years old) is NOT a fast one. Some miracle pill, "crazy wrap thing" (ItWorks people I'm looking at you), or protein shake will not miraculously turn you into a fitness model on the cover of a magazine (newsflash: they're not real anyway). I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the only thing that will help you reach your goal is hard work, dedication, healthy habits and sweat. Lots and lots of sweat.
As a general rule, watch out for companies/products that promote weight loss with little to no exercise whatsoever. Often those products contain harmful components meant to "detox" your system which is only healthy in moderation, not in excess. No wrap will ever be a substitute for actual exercise either.
Keep in mind that the only way to real, bonafide results is through EFFORT. Try to exercise three to four times a week for at least 30 minutes, even if you're just taking a walk around the block. Eat clean foods, and try to only eat things with familiar ingredients and words you can pronounce on the label (easier said than done). Drink A LOT of water, and try adding tea to your diet. Green tea is full of antioxidants and is a natural cleanser, and also contains caffeine, which makes it a healthy alternative to sugary drinks. Allow yourself to "cheat" and don't cry over spilled milk — your weight loss journey will not be completely derailed because of one ice cream sundae.
Remember that when trying to attain your personal health goal, the biggest obstacle is yourself. Keep working hard, don't buy into weight loss scams that are just trying to eat your money, and don't become discouraged. Real health is well within your reach, and it's never too late to start working!
