Last week, Apple released iOS 10 to the public. I heard mixed reviews about the update so I was hesitant to download it. About a day or two later, my curiosity was killing me so I had to go ahead and download it to see it for myself. After my phone restarted, I had no idea what I got myself into. I could not recognize my phone. It was like I had gotten a whole new phone. Who needs an iPhone 7/7 Plus? The home screen looked different but it didn't just stop there. I'm still not exactly sure how I feel about this update. I'm still getting the hang of it but there are some things I like while there are some things I dislike. Here are those things:
1. No More Slide to Unlock
We have all gotten so used to sliding our finger to the right and unlocking our phones with a Touch ID or passcode but with iOS 10, those days are over. When you slide to the right, the camera pops up and when you slide to the left a bunch of things come up like events on your calendar, Siri app suggestions, the news, and more. All of this caught me off guard because I had no idea how to get into my phone. "Slide to unlock" has become "Press home to unlock" and I don't know how to feel. It's just weird.
2. The GIF Keyboard in Messages
I've actually wanted this so bad so I was way too excited when I found this out. As you all can probably see, I love GIFs so this feature basically completes me. I'm glad that I can send gifs and know that they'll definitely work.
3. The New Emojis
Nope. It's a no from me. I like the old ones better. I especially don't like when you send emojis pure emojis in a message and they get really big. It creeps me out and feels like I'm on Facebook Messenger. Tragic.
4. The Water Gun Emoji
This needed its own section because really? You give us a middle finger emoji but you replace the gun emoji with a water gun?! It's so cringe worthy. I heard rumors about this happening but I didn't believe and now I see it and I'm like wow. Way to prevent violence, Apple.
5. Individualized Read Receipts
I can't do read receipts. It feels weird for me to have them on because I am actually one of those people that forgets to respond to messages and I don't want someone to see the time stamp and think I'm ignoring them. I think this feature is pretty cool though if you only want them on for certain people and not everyone.
6. Night Shift
I am one of those people who uses their phone right before bed. I really need to break this habit but the Night Shift mode is actually supporting my bad habit. Located in the control center, the night shift dulls the lighting so my phone isn't blinding me when I'm trying to use it in the dark.
Well now I've realized I can continue this list and probably say more good than bad things about iOS 10, so this may mean that it's actually not that bad!
