With all of the awful things that are happening in this world right now, I figured it would be nice to point out some of the things we have in life to be happy about. It is important to recognize and understand all the tragic events of the past six months, but it is equally as important to remember that not everything in life ends tragically and not every person is violent and evil. I am fortunate enough to have some wonderful things to be thankful for and I hope this allows others to think about and remember the things they have to be thankful for as well.
In a failed attempt to not be overly cheesy, here are some things I think we all have in life to be happy about: love, uncontrollable laughter, high-fives, music, a smile from a stranger, laying in the sunshine on the beach, cuddling with your dogs or cats, the first time you realize the weather is getting nicer and summer is approaching, listening to the ocean, finishing a really good book, hot chocolate, the colors of autumn, friendship, freedom to speak our minds, LGBTQ Pride, diversity, flowers, visiting your grandparents, baby's laughs, fuzzy socks on a hardwood floor, coloring, our imaginations, blankets, bonfires, chocolate, the way home feels, chocolate, a great hug, CHOCOLATE. Just to name a few.
One of the biggest things we have in life to be happy about is our family. Your family is the one thing that you always have no matter what happens. And it’s true, not all families are perfect. I don’t think there is such a thing as a perfect family but just because it isn’t perfect doesn’t mean it isn’t special and worth something. The best part about family is that it doesn’t just have to be those who you are related to by blood or even marriage. Your family is anyone that you love unconditionally and who loves you just the same. Find those who you can share such a love with and never let them go. With those you love, you will always find happiness.
It is so easy to get caught up in all of the terrible and horrific things that are happening in the world. And I know ignoring these awful things doesn’t do anyone any good. I am not suggesting we pretend like these things aren’t happening, but I also think it is okay and really important to take a few minutes every once in a while and allow yourself to feel happy about the things you have. Happiness is contagious. Take it and give it away. God knows there are so many people in this world that are searching for something that will make them feel like everything is going to be okay. I think it is our job as human beings to share and spread love and happiness where it feels like there is none. Maybe with a little more love we can overpower the hate and violence dominating the world around us.
