It is truly astonishing, the amount of people that go hungry every year, especially around the holiday season, including Halloween, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. Naturally, to amend this insecurity, food drives are held in various places. The most recent food drive that is local to Purchase, however, is NYPIRG’s Trick or Eat. One of New York Public Interest and Research Group’s largest and most effective campaigns is hunger and homelessness outreach. This campaign entails running food drives, hygiene product drives, and clothing drives. The group’s current collection drive is a food collection known as Trick or Eat.
In the past NYPIRG has run numerous collection drives for places like Lifting Up Westchester and My Sister’s Place, a women’s shelter in Westchester. This collection drive is gathering food donations for People to People, Rockland county’s largest food pantry. According to the organization’s website, they provided food to roughly 14,000 Rockland households in this past year alone. The People to People website also boasts that greater than 95% of the fiscal donations given to the organization go directly to providing programs and services such as the food pantry. This amounts to less than 5% of donations going towards operating costs.
To support People to People, NYPIRG will be collecting donations at the organization’s office, located at Campus Center North, at the Olde Community Center, and at the Multicultural center as well. Additionally, NYPIRG representatives will be going door to door throughout the on campus apartments, in costume, collecting food donations. It looks like many people will have a happy Halloween after all.
