It is finally October. The month that is dedicated to all things spooky and scary. Most people celebrate by carving and decorating pumpkins and eating candy, while others are more daring. These daring people will test their scare limit by staying in some of the world’s most haunted hotels.
Stanley Hotel, Estes Park
This hotel was built in 1909. Its paranormal activity can be traced back to the 1970s. After several paranormal investigations, it is believed that F. O. Stanley, along with his wife, are the two main ghosts that haunt the hotel. They are often seen in the Billiards Room and playing on the piano located in the Music Room. This is also the hotel where Stephen King stayed and therefore produced the novel The Shining. His experiences during his stay influenced the popular novel and film. The staff at the hotel provide nightly ghost tours and there is an on-site psychic as well.
Bourbon Orleans Hotel, New Orleans
This grand hotel opened way back in 1827. First it was used as a ballroom where extravagant events were held. Later it was transformed into a school, orphanage, medical ward, and a convent. Many children had died in this place due to yellow fever. It is said that the ghosts of the kids, as well as the nuns, are seen drifting through the hotel with their voices being heard.
Emily Morgan Hotel, San Antonio
This hotel also used to be a medical facility housing a morgue and a psychiatric ward. The guests rather frequently hear unexplained noises and the palpable feeling of being touched. The rooms located on floors seven, nine, eleven, and twelve are supposedly the most haunted. Every Thursday night, the hotel holds palm readings.
Omni Parker House, Boston
Omni Parker House opened in the 1850s and was managed by Harvey Parker until he died in 1884. Although guests sometimes feel as if he never really died. Guests have claimed that the ghost will ask them how their stay was. Furthermore, following a death in room 303, there has been reports of laughter and the strong scent of whiskey that lingers. The short story 1408 was made into a movie and is centered around this hotel and the paranormal activity it holds.
Langham Hotel, London
This hotel is the most historical hotel in all of London and it has been that way since 1865. The hotel has earned stays from celebrities and royals. Ghosts, too, have made the list. One of the ghosts that guests have spotted most often is a German prince, soldier, and doctor who murdered his wife before taking his own life. Emperor Napoleon lll is apparently living in the basement. The most haunted room inside this hotel is room 333.
The Southern Mansion, Cape May
George Allen and his family built this country estate in 1863. When all of the Allen family passed away, the property was sold. It was then restored still using its original architectural heirlooms. It is said that one of the nieces is seen roaming about the property, mostly in the kitchen. If you chose to spend a night in this hotel, you will often hear stories about all of the ghosts from the staff.
Audubon Cottages, New Orleans
This hotel was built in the 18th century and underwent many renovations and maintenance updates, so it makes sense for this place to be involved in haunted history. The cottages with most frequent paranormal activity are cottages two and four. Cottage four houses a Confederate soldier who is often blaring country music through a nearby radio. He has also been seen in the courtyard.
The Marshall House, Savannah
This 68 room house mainly accommodated Union soldiers during the Civil War. One of their current guests claim that those soldiers are still walking the hallways. When this hotel earned itself a renovation, human remains were discovered underneath floorboards. Other paranormal activity that takes place are the sounds of children running down the halls, rattling doorknobs, and faucets turning on and off by themselves.
Hotel Sorrento, Seattle
In this popular Seattle hotel, the ghost of Alice B. Toklas haunts the place. Toklas is known for the invention of pot brownies. She is often spotted roaming the halls, especially around room 408. Guests reported that their drinks were moved to different spots on the tables in the Dunbar Room. The hotel even offers a cocktail named after her, Ms. Toklas.
Omni Shoreham, Washington D.C.
This hotel was built in 1930 and has nothing but echoing ceilings, grand chandeliers, and a haunted suite. The suite consists of two bedrooms and a full kitchen. The haunted spirits are the owner along with his daughter and housekeeper. It was the daughter and the housekeeper who died in the suite. Strange noises, flickering lights, and the sounds of running have all been reported.
Ballygally Castle, Northern Ireland
Lord James Shaw and his wife used to live at the castle until his wife died. The wife somehow fell to her death but it is unclear if she actually fell, jumped, or was pushed. Her ghost haunts the castle to this day by knocking on doors and disappearing seconds later. In her honor, the hotel dedicated one of the oldest towers to be named after her, The Ghost Room.
