This is my response to the Florida shootings. I know it's a little late but better late than never.
On Saturday June 11th, 2016 a man stormed into a gay nightclub. This man was soon to be identified as Omar Mateen. The United States has been greatly shocked by this occurrence.
Every time something like this happens it has two effects. One part of me feels "How could someone hold so much pain and hurt in their heart to kill innocent people?" Then I turn the channel and see the outpouring of support from all around the country and the world.
I want to pose a hypothetical to y'all.
What if we were all the same? No race, no difference in size, no difference in height. If all of us were cookie cutter would we still have the same problem? Would we shoot each other for lack of better things to do?
The mess were in all comes from our lack of willingness to speak the language of love.
We are all human. Made from the dust of the stars. We are all flesh, blood, muscle and air. No matter if you're black, white, Hispanic or mixed. No matter if you're gay, straight, bi, undecided or believe gender is relative.
We all need love. No matter what happens in life, you're going to need human companionship.
We all have nights when we sit in our loneliness listening to the sorrowful ballads of love lost. Ballads of love taken, love forgotten. Breathtakingly beautiful ballads of love never had. We relate to the emotion. Every human has been lonely.
So, when you become a companion to someone, when you show someone love, you appeal to the fact that we're all hurting. We all have huge gaping places for people to fit into our heart.
So, if we open up our minds, and choose to understand that we are all humans who need love, I know deep in my heart that hate won't win. If everyone bands together in love, Hate can't win. There are many ways to show love, from seemingly small and inexpensive things like holding the door for someone or carrying someone's groceries, to more expensive things paying for someones' meal or starting an organization.
There are millions of possibilties. Don't let hate win. Let love win.
