"Steady now, steady now. Hand, stop shaking. Let's try to make this look easy for once in our lives."
*Pokes eye out*
You've been there many times before: Your friends invite you to go out, and you agree. That, however, is before remembering that you will be expected to not look like you just rolled out of bed. You're expected to paint your face, contour whatever needs to be contoured, probe at your eyes a few times in the attempt to make them "pop," get artsy with your cheap eye shadow palette (because there's no way you're investing anymore money into this nonsense) and—on top of all of that—have fun, despite the burning sensation to touch your face.
You are the person who hates makeup, but you still obey the societal pressure to look more refined. You loathe eyeliner just as much as a Goth prince loathes you for loathing eyeliner, yet you still struggle through another horrific game of ocular connect-the-dots that never fails to result in you resembling Meeko from "Pocahontas."
You can like styling your hair and buying too many clothing items that you don't need, but you still don't get the thing about makeup. You'll wear it due to its nature of being an odd social obligation, but you never really enjoy it.
You've been dragged along by a friend to explore Ulta for three hours, even though you never thought that to be possible. Sephora terrifies you, and you find a much greater comfort in the three cosmetics aisles of Walmart.
Perhaps, you are like me and didn't truly understand the appalling extent of the monstrous empire of makeup with all of its related goods and by-products, until your first dress rehearsal as a chorus girl in your high school's production of "Crazy for You." After laboring over that mirror for hours, you managed to darken your skin's pigmentation at least three large notches. Your one friend honestly did not recognize you and your teeth were stained with lipstick for at least two hours before that one girl with the beautifully manicured face finally pointed it out.
You hate makeup, but you still wear it. And some people don't get that: "If you don't like to wear it, then don't wear it."
"Well, imaginary yet aggravating person, you are not me. You—with your perfectly symmetrical eyeliner wings—don't understand the trials and tribulations of a struggling girl like me, wishing my confidence in my makeup-applying ability matched my supposed-to-be-healthier self-image."
The truly natural look—not the Kardashians' "natural" look—is the most difficult look to pull off. Wearing absolutely no make-up—not even a nearly microscopic sweep of mascara—is more about loving yourself than loving your look.
Dear person who hates makeup but still struggles to figure it out,
I feel your pain, and I wish it were easier to give up on makeup too.
Always,
That one chick who looks wasted but just loves rubbing her eyes too much.
