10 Habits You Should Leave In High School

In high school, there are many not-so-great habits you might be able to get away withprocrastinating, relying on your reputation to get you by, being judgmental of others. However, once you get to college, you should take the opportunity to make a fresh start and leave these habits behind in order to create a happier, healthier life for yourself. Here are some high school habits you should definitely leave behind when you go to college.

1. Putting everything off until the last minute.

Where it may be fine to procrastinate in high school because the workload is significantly smaller, you will dig yourself into a hole if you carry the same habit into your college career. Try to plan ahead and get assignments done as soon as possible. This way, you will have more time to revise and ask for help if you encounter any difficulty.

2. Relying on your high school reputation to get you by.

In college, you will be exposed to a completely new environment of people with ranging abilities. Understand that no one at your new school is going to care that you were captain of your sports' team or that you made prom king/queen. With that in mind, you should seek out people with similar interests, and get involved in as many activities as you can; this will help you create lasting relationships with people who are passionate about the same things as you are.

3. Skipping school just because.

In college, you will have very limited opportunities to miss class until your grade is affected. You should save these days for when you really need them instead of skipping just because you don't want to go. You never know when an unexpected emergency or sickness could come up.

4. Not excercising.

The freshman 15 is real, and unless you make an effort to incorporate time for physical fitness into your schedule, it will happen to you. Remember that your physical health is just as important as your mental health. Taking time to exercise can be a great reliever of stress, which will help you complete those 4 papers and 3 projects you have due next week without freaking out.

5. Being judgmental of others.

In college, you're going to see some weird sh*t. Accept this. Go in with an open mind, and you'll have a much happier experience.

6. Treating your parents poorly.

It's easy to take your parents for granted when you see them every day in high school, but you're most likely going to miss them (and everything they do for you) a lot when you're away at college. Call and/or text them often, ask them for help when you need it, and keep them in the loop with how your life is going. They can offer you some great advice when you're struggling through something difficult, and remember that they're probably missing you too.

7. Expecting everything to be handed to you.

Once you reach college, you're going to be surrounded by people who are as good or even better at your strengths than you are. So, understand that you'll have to work harder for what you want. Don't let this discourage you from doing what you love. Rather, let it motivate you to achieve more and try even harder to succeed.

8. Not studying for exams.

This is definitely something you can't get away with in college. Without studying for an exam, you will do poorly. Make time to go to the library or a coffee shop, and really spend some time going over the course material. You'll thank yourself later! Which reminds me...

9. Not taking notes in class.

Taking notes in class will save you a lot of time and stress when you're trying to study for the exam later. Write down key themes discussed in class. This will help you to retain more information while also keeping you from dozing off in a boring class.

10. Having a poor sleep schedule.

Staying up late every night and waking up early every morning catches up to you—fast. Try to go to bed at a consistent time every night to ensure you will be awake and attentive in class the next day. It'll also help you to be less grumpy!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
