23 Food Hacks You Need For The Gustavus Caf

It's no secret that Gustavus Adolphus College has an amazing cafeteria, but even the best caf food can get old after the first few months. Check out this list of recipes, hacks, and tips and try them out on your next visit!

1. Burrito Bowl/Taco Salad

Grab your salad base like spinach and lettuce from the salad bar and head over to the burrito line and get your toppings! (Rice, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, guac, sour cream, taco meat, etc.)

2. Pick your own sandwich base

Bagel, English muffin, bread, bun, etc. over by the silverware to get more options than what the Deli offers.

3. More sandwich options when you combine stations

Grilled chicken and bun from the Grill, cheese and tomatoes from the Deli, spinach from the salad bar, and guacamole from the burrito line and you've got yourself a delicious combination of a sandwich.

4. Use waffle toppings for your ice cream

Whipped cream and strawberry sauce...yum!

5. Cheesy pasta

Get some regular noodles and steal some cheese sauce from the rotisserie.

6. Breakfast sandwich/burrito

Grab an English muffin and top it with a fried egg, bacon, cheese, or whatever other toppings you prefer and send it through the toaster OR ask for a burrito at the Grill and have them fill it with whatever you want.

7. Walking Tacos

Grab a bag of Doritos and head to the burrito line and add taco meat, cheese, lettuce, salsa, and sour cream for the perfect walking taco!

8. Egg salad or deviled eggs

Steal some hard boiled eggs from the salad bar and mix in mayo, mustard, salt, and pepper for egg salad or take out the yokes and combine with those ingredients for deviled eggs.

9. Twice-baked potatoes

Get a baked potato or sweet potato, mash with a fork, and add any toppings of your choice like cheese or ranch, microwave, and enjoy!

10. Steam your own veggies

Just add a little water to some raw veggies from the salad bar and microwave.

11. Pizza bagels

Take a bagel, add some marinara sauce from the pasta bar, cheese from the salad bar, and any other toppings before sending it through the toaster to get a delicious pizza bagel!

12. Chicken and waffles

It's as simple as it gets. Get some chicken strips from the Grill and make a waffle.

13. Thai sauce

Mix together peanut butter, soy sauce, and sriracha.

14. Quesadilla

Get a burrito with beans, cheese, meat, or anything else of your choice, head over to the salad bar and add more cheese (because why not) fold over and send through the toaster on high heat once or twice.

15. Root beer floats

Easy enough...just get some soft serve ice cream and pour in root beer or any other soft drink.

16. Jazz up your waffles

Mix in peanut butter, honey, fruit, or anything else before pouring your batter into the waffle maker.

17. Potatoes + Soup

It's exactly what it sounds like. Put any soup of your choice on top of mashed or baked potatoes and enjoy a homemade-tasting meal!

18. Microwave Nachos

Throw some Doritos on a plate and top with cheese, beans, or whatever else. Put it in the microwave and Voilà!

19. Make your own pasta

Mix in cooked veggies, beans, cheese, meat, olive oil, etc. with plain noodles and customize your pasta dish!

20. Milkshake

Get some soft serve, add in milk, and stir well.

21. Soup add-ins

Mix in some extra toppings like beans, veggies, noodles, meat, or whatever else to spice up the regular soup.

22. Hummus

Steal some hummus from the Deli to pair with your vegetables.

23. Foods you might not know about

Whole tomatoes can be found at the Deli or Grill

Puppy Chow is often back by the desserts

Hot cereals are available

Sushi is in the large cooler

Hot chocolate/tea mix is by the drinks

Banana bread is sold in the bakery

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
