11 Guilty Pleasure Songs

Why should we be ashamed for liking a song that makes us feel?

11 Guilty Pleasure Songs

I like music. No wait...I LOVE music. Music keeps my heart happy and is what makes the universe sing. Music can save the world; in 1989, Leonard Bernstein and his orchestra played Beethoven's 9th Symphony after the reunification of Germany after the Berlin Wall fell. That act brought two separate sides together in unity and love.

Coming in to modern times, there have been great success and great failures with bands and singers. Many would become great, famous, and legendary, but then there are those who have a one hit wonder and then cannot get back into the light. We all have a share of music we love to like, but there are also a share of music we are not so loving that we like. We all have guilty pleasure songs. So in no particular order, here are my top 11 guilty pleasure songs that I am not ashamed (even though I should be for a few) of loving.

1. Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley

YOU HAVE JUST BEEN RICK ROLLED!!!!!!! Just kidding. As people get sick and tired of clicking links to videos where this song pops out of nowhere, I listen to it and take notes as the lyrics tell you how to be gentleman.

2. Oops I Did it Again by Brittany Spears

Classic Britany before the meltdown and bad life choices. This song defined her peak that brought joy to boys and girls at the turn of the century everywhere.

3. Careless Whisper by George Michael

The saxophone riff that birthed Sexy Sax Man. If it was not for the sax, I would have easily passed up this song.

4. Dear Future Husband by Meghan Trainor

Now before you judge me to pieces on this one, let me explain. The reason I actually like this song is because of the music, not the words. Take a listen to the instrumental verson. I am a big fan of the Doo-Wop style and the music mirrors it for me.

5. Love Yourself by Justin Bieber

I never thought I would see the day where I would admit to liking a Bieber song. I am still lightyears away from being a Belieber, but this was a good one. A happy song with lyrics that could make you rethink your relationship.

6. My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion

Beloved by so many, I can honestly say that I hate Titanic. I really really do. However, the theme song is pretty dank. (dank is good) I have started to enjoy the song more in the last few years because a dear friend of mine choreographed a beautiful dance to it that put me in tears.

7. If I Could Turn Back Time by Cher

2 words: Jack McFarland.

8. Livin' La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin

When I first heard this song, I was on vacation and it was on the Disney Channel with short clips of Mickey Mouse and his gang. I enjoyed this song ever since and it is one that I have no explaination for on why.

9. Hips Don't Lie by Shakira

Ok let us be honest here. Who does not love this song? As soon as the trumpets play, I get hooked on this song.

10. I Feel Like a Woman by Shania Twain

The guitar right after the chorus just makes me pause everything. Just for the guitar right after the chorus.

11. Pretty much anything from the Backstreet Boys

Backstreet Boys were, are, and will always be a part of my life. It is impossible to pick my favorite. I love them so much that I vowed to sing along no matter where I am or what I am doing.

The best thing to hear from someone is "I didn't know you like that song." It is a great way to find common ground with new people We all have songs that we're not proud (or so we say) to love. Music is music. We are all different on what we like to listen to and our tastes all have a large range. I say hold your head up high and listen with grace and dance like a fool whenever that song comes on. Dance to your own beat and never let anyone tell you otherwise.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
