I remember going to my first college party like it was only yesterday. It was themed "black out." (Yes, I know it sounds absolutely terrifying.) The music was loud, the house was unbearably hot and humid, and there were definitely over 100 people there.
*Gasp*
I was completely overwhelmed and, to be honest, a little scared. I clung tightly to my newfound college friends as we weaved our way through the masses of sweaty scholars.
Although most of the night was a blur, I remember thinking to myself, You really should have prepared yourself for this. And that got me thinking some more. Before college, I wasn’t really exposed to a “crazy” party scene. No one had really warned me about what exactly goes down at these types of shindigs. Nobody told me what to wear, what time to arrive, or who to go with. So, here are a couple of tips for going to your first frat party that might be helpful.
DO: Dress like it’s going to be about 20 degrees warmer than it is outside. Odds are it’s going to be pretty packed and it’s going to be very hot very quickly.
DON’T: Drink the stuff that looks like Kool-Aid that someone offers you. It’s not Kool-Aid; trust me.
DO: Wear protective shoes!! Your feet will probably be stomped on more than once.
DON’T: Stand in the corner and stare and be antisocial. It’s not fun and you look kind of weird.
DO: Go with a small group of friends. Preferably 3-4 because it won’t be that hard to get in the door if the group is strict about that kind of thing.
DON’T: Talk smack about the fraternity or group that’s hosting the party. They’re nice enough to have a party and let you in. Just be nice, even if they’re not your fav.
DO: Feel free to document the night with plenty of pictures and sober tweets. Just be careful about what’s in your hands/the background!
DON’T: Sit on your phone the whole night. You’re at a party; enjoy yourself.
DO: Make a new friend. Whether it’s a person you recognize from a class or one of the fraternity brothers, make the effort to make a connection.
Hopefully, these tips will make attending your first ever college party and experience to (sort of) remember.
