As I've gotten older, my Christmas list has gotten shorter and shorter each year. To be entirely honest, I was not sure why until I realized that all the things I need or want are unattainable and it's pretty sad.
1. My college costs paid for (or just at lower cost)
What I would give to be able to not be in student debt. However, you can't just ask for $30,000 a year. I'll be paying on college and grad school forever, but it's worth it. Right?
2. A job in my field
We all want a job in our field after college. It's the thing we are studying four years for and sometimes more for grad school. However, everyone is overqualified now and there just aren't enough positions. Wouldn't it be great if we could all do what we went to school for and love?
3. To feel safe walking down the street at night
I live in a relatively small college town and you would think I would be safe walking down the streets, but the number of times that a truck or car has slowed down behind me and yelled disgusting offers or I've taken a brighter path because a group of guys was walking behind me for no reason is not right. We should feel safe to walk home after work.
4. Someone who wants a relationship
In a world where the popularity of hookups is at an all-time high and an overabundance of Tinder users popularize this culture even more, I just want a relationship. Sure I've been on the other side of it and done some things I'm not proud of, but all most people seem to want is sex. Yes, it's a crucial aspect in a relationship and it's fun, but I'm almost 21 and while that doesn't sound that old, I would like something serious and not just a hookup. However, it's surprisingly difficult to find.
It's sad when this is what I want for Christmas, but it's all unattainable. My parents' generation has zero debt from college, jobs in their fields, and while they may not be perfect, they are in a much better place than my generation will ever be. My wishes seem utopic now, when they used to just be normal. It's a shocking, sad reality.
