Growing Up With Older Brothers As A Girl

Growing Up With Older Brothers As A Girl

Growing up as the youngest and only girl in a family of boys has had its ups and downs.

Here are 15 things girls with older brothers understand:

1. You've had a crush on at least one of your brother's friends

The only girl in a house full of older brothers means your brother will bring his friends every once in awhile and sometimes your brother has some pretty cute friends, but of course that's not something you could/would ever tell your brother.

2. He will NEVER approve of ANY guy you ever like

He isn't always the nicest to you, but there was no way he was ever going to let anybody hurt you. He never thought any boy was good enough for his little sister, maybe it's because he's a boy so he knows exactly how they think.

3. You never got to pick what you guys watched on TV

He's bigger, stronger, and older so he always got the remote, and you always had to watch what he wanted, so you basically grew up watching Sports Center.

4. You learned how to be tough

Growing up the only girl with three older brothers, it was either learn how to fight or get beat up, so I learned how to fight really quickly.

5. He taught you to love sports

Football every Sunday, Monday and Thursday. Yelling at the TV and arguing if you guys liked two different teams.

6. Whenever he didn't know what to wear he came to you.

If your dream was to be a personal stylist as a child then growing up with older brothers was perfect for you. Anytime your brother had an important event and needed to look nice he asked you what he should wear.

7. One of your friends had a crush on him at one point in time

You gagged a little when your friend told you your older brother was cute, but it's happened at least once and maybe even a few more times.

8. He always thinks you need help whenever you do ANYTHING

No matter what it was, grabbing something off the top shelf, opening a jar, cutting a tomato or just carrying a box to your room, your brother always thought you couldn't do it yourself. You may have needed help but you would never say that out loud because you HAD to prove him wrong.

9. You've had a couple of minor heart attacks in your life

You round the corner and your brother jumps out. You walk down into the basement, and he turns off the light and shuts the door. Nothing is scarier than living in a house with older brothers.

10. You're not considered a lady to your brothers

To them you'll always just be one of the guys. They'll never see you as a lady but maybe that's because you guys grew up rough housing all the time.

11. If you even just mention a boy your brother asks 20 questions

What's his name? How old is he? What kind of grades does he get? How many girlfriends has he had in the last year? Does he go to church? Does he do any drugs? Could I possibly get his phone number, address, social security number and email address?

12. Their dress code for you is way stricter than any school dress code

You think you're going out in that? Hahaha nope, go on back to your room and change! Is that a shoulder I see? Nope, you're not going anywhere like that!

13. They show you how a real man treats a woman

He may be a total bully to you, but he still opens doors for you, hugs you when you're upset and supports you through every endeavor in life.

14. If you ever need back up, he is there

Having boy problems? Being bullied by some older kids? Your big brother is always there to rescue you and make everything better.

15. You grew up having a best friend

You fought 24/7, you've been hurt more times than you can count and you have a couple scars from the viscous attacks of your ruthless older brothers, but no matter what you always had a bodyguard, playmate, secret keep and a best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
