Growing Old With Ice Cream

7

It was sixth grade when my first boyfriend said, at the time, the most heartbreaking, dramatic words ever know to girl world. Let’s just be friends.  Oh, friends you want? I loved you! Not really. At twelve years old, who knew what love meant? But hey, it sounded cool.

Those years were dramatic for any young girl. The male anatomy was an impossible concept, and still is to this day for the majority of the female population. However, with boy troubles there is always an upside to every tear, every stomachache, and every. When our hearts melt, there is always something frozen. There is ice cream. Ice cream, this is a thank you letter for all the times you have picked us back up and fallen back in love. That day I first felt my heart break in sixth grade, I turned to ice cream and suddenly was laughing and smiling in then end. Oh, and probably had another crush the next day because it was sixth grade after all…

What is more refreshing than a scoop of creamy, cold, extraordinarily delicious ice cream? Well, maybe a warm chocolate chip cookie right under, but we’re focusing on ice cream here. As a little girl, going to the ice cream shop with my Dad on a warm summer night was one of my favorite childhood memories. My Dad loved his traditional butterscotch sundae, while I indulged in a cone full of mint chocolate chip ice cream. When the heat rose, the ice cream dripped down your cone, making creamy puddles on the sidewalk. Of course, we all remember the truck that was heard all over the neighborhood, strolling around with a song that we’ll never forget. The ice cream truck was what we woke up to as little kids. We chased it down, screamed to our parents and tried to order every ice cream sandwich or popsicle possible. Summers packed with sleepovers with your friends making ice cream sundaes late at night became a ritual for my group of friends. Ice cream has always been a classic bite that warms your heart after any ache or pain. Any topping is possible, any fruit can be added, and any side dish can be included.

I might never know what that special ingredient in ice cream is that cures every problem. Whatever it is, it is magical. Maybe it’s the sprinkles that act like fairy dust. Or it might be chocolate bites of M&M’s, Reeses or Oreos. After a bad day at school or a fight with your parents, just grab your friends and ride your bikes to the nearest ice cream shop. Today, I can easily walk across the street and devour rich Cold Stone with my roommates. It’s the therapy my friends and I need after a brutal exam or heartbreak.

I can’t say my love life is anything like it was in sixth grade, but ice cream has remained by my side since day one and hasn’t changed a bit. These days, my friends and I will simply grab a tub of ice cream whenever we need that boost back up again. That spoonful of chocolate custard, drizzled with rainbow sprinkles happens to be the best medicine. It’s our rebound. Boys, while you turn to your contact list and guilty recent calls, we’re opening up our pint of cookie dough ice cream. Judge us, but we’ll be the ones waking up with no regrets.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
