What Growing Up In The Mountains Taught Me

If you're lucky enough to live in the mountains, you're lucky enough.

What Growing Up In The Mountains Taught Me

Growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains has been a blessing. Having the experience of true beauty from the vibrant colors of a sunset over the western mountain ranges to being rewarded by seeing a picturesque waterfall after a long hike uphill is something someone doesn't get to experience every day. I'm proud to say that I can experience this and also live it daily. Being able to hike up to a mountain peak on a beautiful day, breathe in the fresh, crisp aroma that is mountain air, and look out at the beautiful layers of rolling ridges as far as the eye can see, is when you know you're home.

The breathtaking views and vast land before you makes you feel so small. Looking out at the limitless scenery and the giant mountains that surround you is a humbling experience. Sitting and reflecting on yourself while having nature's peace flow through you makes your problems seem so much smaller. Realizing that you're so tiny in this immeasurable universe humbles you. The immense amount of sky stretching out forever while you're nestled in between trees, feeling like you're on top of the world will make the things you worry about feel so insignificant. This experience has always provided a new perspective for me, and helped me realize how small I am, and the little things I worry about are, compared to the endless nature before me.

The seasons have taught me to appreciate life as it happens, and that change is a good thing. I have learned never to get so caught up in life that I let the beautiful surprises that nature creates go unnoticed. To be driving down the road thinking about everything I have to do and to realize that the trees all around me are bathed in an orange, red, and yellow burst of color is a beautiful thing. To watch as the mountains slowly regain their color from winter, and to witness the busy bees going about their day as the first flowers of spring start to bloom. It's the little things that take us back to reality. Walking out of the house on an early spring morning with so much going through your head, when you stop to hear the melodies that the birds sing so well. My favorite is fresh snow, to be able to watch as it blankets everything in a pristine white, that moment when everything is silent and peaceful as the snow falls continuously. The simple things count, a warm spring day after a long cold winter is always appreciated more.

Nature is my therapy. Being able to venture out and find a warm, sunny place that overlooks the mountains and just sit in complete silence is my remedy. These mountains have been the peace I've needed, the space to think about anything on my mind, and the tranquility that helped brighten up my day. Sitting on top of a mountain peak brings feelings of comfort and serenity. I know that I can always soothe whatever is on my mind when I'm in such an alluring environment.

Most importantly of all, these mountains have taught me never to take anything for granted. It is easy to get caught up in everyday life, and sometimes I forget how fortunate I am to be able to call this beautiful place home. Looking around anywhere I am and being able to see the stunning mountains around me has helped me realize how lucky I truly am. I will always stay humble and never take these mountains for granted.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
