I'm not lucky because I'm a female.
I'm lucky because I didn't grow up knowing what oppression was.
I'm lucky because I can't remember a time when I was seriously told that I could or could not do something because I am female.
I am lucky because I didn't even realize that was a problem until I was in junior high. Now, don't get me wrong; I'm not saying I'm lucky for being ignorant. I'm lucky because I have never had to personally deal with sexism placed on me, I have only seen it worn on others or heard how it attacked women across the globe.
I am lucky because I grew up with strong female presences in my life that taught me how to fight for me and male presences that have always empowered me; but, there are countless women who don't get that luxury. Not luxury as in mansions and sports cars, I mean the luxury of being able to live with the full extent of my gender without having it crushed.
There are those out there who are not so lucky. There are females, whether born as one or understood to be one, that are not and will not ever be as lucky. That's something I don't think we always think about when it comes to equality or freedom or feminism even. It's not all about being told you can play football with the guys or get paid the same as your male counterpart, while those are important as well.
There are those that are not so lucky and we forget about them. We forget about the women in Third World countries who are raped and forced into marriage, sometimes at an age so young that they may not have even started their periods yet. We forget that as we fight our fights for equality, there are women fighting to survive thousands of miles away. We forget that not everyone has a voice.
We are lucky that we have a voice. Don't think that I'm trying to lessen the importance of our fight, because it is important to show the world that things like the length of a skirt should not be believed to hinder another student's ability to learn.
We are lucky that we have the opportunity to fight that fight.
We are lucky that we are still valued.
We are lucky to find others out there to fight with us and make a stand.
If you think feminism and equality and freedom are all about wage gaps and sports you're wrong. It's about empowering the women around us to fight for each other and ourselves so that we can spread the meaning of equality across the world.
I am lucky that I get to put my voice into the world through these weekly articles, and I hope to one day help women everywhere become lucky enough to not face the horror of inequality.
