Over the past couple of years, Greek life nationally has been put under a microscope and has been given many labels. The world seems to forget that every Greek chapter is different. We might share the same letters or the same values, but each individual in Greek life nationwide is unique. The actions of a few individuals or an entire chapter do not represent Greeks around the country. The media and universities seem to give us all the same stereotypical attitudes, wardrobe and lifestyles, which brainwashes non-Greeks into thinking we are a bunch of party animals who "haze" our new members and think we are an elite society. But no one gives Greeks the recognition of the good deeds we do.

Greek is good because it offers leadership opportunities. Holding a position on the Executive Board in a Greek organization is challenging at times, but it's also very rewarding. It's no secret that holding officer positions in any organization helps you stand out when looking for a job after graduation. You have the opportunity to learn how to delegate a chapter, whether it's 50 members or 200 members, as well as how to improve your chapter. Over 85 percent of the student leaders on 730 campuses are members of Greek-letter organizations and 85 percent of the Fortune 500 key executives are fraternity or sorority members.

Greeks is good because academic success is important. School comes first. That's why we all came to college -- to get a degree and be successful in our career. Every chapter has GPA requirements, not only to be in the organization, but to hold officer positions too. Some chapters pride themselves on having high GPAs and try to maintain that reputation for as long as possible.

Greek is good because Greek life donates millions of dollars to philanthropy. Each organization has their national philanthropy, as well as small philanthropies that have affected their chapter personally, whether it was a passing of one of their members or a family member that has a disability. Each year Greeks host annual philanthropy events to raise as much money as possible for a cause they actually care about. We don't do it because we have to; we do it because we want to. In 2013-2014, National Panhellenic Council donated $5.5 million and The North American Interfraternity Council donated $20.3 million.

Greek is good because you gain a second family. While you may not be close with every brother or sister, you'll find your best friends and they'll be there for you no matter what. Whether it's going out together, being there during a bad breakup or just sitting next to each other during meeting, you'll find your ride-or-die friends. Living in the house also gives you the advantage of being close to campus and being surrounded by your best friends 24/7, and nothing is better than that. While chapters are different at every school, especially in which hemisphere you're in, we accept our members for who they are because even though we all come from different places and backgrounds, we all joined Greek life for the same reason. We wanted to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and find our home away from home.

Greek is good because you learn the importance of values. All the founding members created these organizations based on the morals and values they believe would make their members strive to be better. Most focus around the respect of ourselves and each other, scholarship, service and leadership, but they are all individually unique. We as members learn and practice these values every as an active or alumnae. As they say, "my letters don't make me better than you, they make me better than who I was."

While the media like to report on the negativity of Greek life and movies display an inaccurate sense of what Greeks are life, society needs to be reminded of the hard work Greeks do and the good deeds that go unnoticed.

I love being Greek, it was the best decision I ever made. My letters have given me some of the best memories and experiences I never thought I would have. Whether you're bonding with girls in line for the bathroom at a fraternity party, meeting alumnae during chapter events or members from other sororities and fraternities coming to each other's philanthropy events, we joined Greek Life for the same reason. Greek Life isn't about throwing the best parties on campus or thinking we're better than nongreek members. It's about becoming the best version of yourself and helping your brothers or sisters do the same. Your time in college and even after college are determined by who you surround yourself with, what you do and what you learn from it. Make it best time of your life.
