Depending on where you go to school, Greek life can be a pretty popular thing to be involved with. I'm not here to say not to join a fraternity or sorority, because they can open up a lot of doors and create everlasting friendships and bonds. We always see posts online about how amazing Greek life is, but I'm here to talk about the opposite perspective. Like I said, being in a frat or sorority can be an amazing experience, but so is NOT being in one.
Freshman year I attended both fall and spring "Meet the Greeks" with my friends who were all interested in pledging a sorority. I thought about it and come sophomore year, I was living with four sisters of the same sorority. I knew all of their friends and sisters, so why not go through recruitment? Long story short, I realized this wasn't for me, and although at the time it was upsetting, I learned everything happens for a reason, right?
At the time I thought this would change all the relationships I had with my roommates. I was wrong. Even though they all had certain things they needed to do and events to attend, they were still my roommates and most importantly some of my best friends. Not joining a sorority was my choice and today I am happy with that decision.
I am still friends with girls in that sorority and consider a few of them my closest friends to this day. No matter what, they were my friends before they became a part of the sorority and nothing can change that. Do they have certain things they have to do sometimes that I can't participate in? Yes, but I'm okay with that. We all understand each other's obligations but still make time for one another. Like I said, we were friends and roommates before any of this, and I wouldn't change anything about our sometimes dysfunctional relationships.
If you want to "go Greek," go for it and have the time of your life! But if it isn't for you, don't worry about it. You can still create relationships and be involved on campus in so many other ways. There are plenty of other clubs that you can join and participate in. If your friends join a sorority it doesn't mean that you have to do it as well just to fit in. If you're lucky like me, you will still be friends with them at the end of your four years together, and carry those relationships forever.
