Graduation: From The Other Side

I am not ready to have them graduate, not even a little.

Graduation: From The Other Side
Caitlin Burton-Dooley

On March 19, which is a Saturday, there will be 50 days to graduation, not including Sundays. I know, it seems like a weird way to keep track of the time, but it makes sense at OWU. Anyway, whatever way your school keeps control of the time, being on the wrong side of the graduation is not the same.

In those 50 days (minus Sundays), my best friend will graduate from college. She's graduating a year early and leaving me for Chicago or maybe New York. I'm so incredibly proud of her, don't get me wrong. Her GPA is to die for, she's got more experience than anyone else her age, she's smart and funny, she's graduating a full year early and she got accepted into master's programs in Chicago and Buffalo.

In short, she's amazing, and I love her more than anyone else. But I'm not really ready to have her go because I thought I had another year.

There were things that I still wanted to do with her like silly trips to Mexico for spring break and getting piercings and tattoos together. I wanted more time to get drunk, maybe actually go to the bar together. In short, I just wanted to have more memories from college with the woman who will one day be my maid of honor.

She's not the only person leaving me; many of my best friends in my sorority are seniors as well, and of course my Big is graduating. There are so many people who will leave, and, honestly, it will be the hardest graduation that I will ever have to go to. I am so incredibly proud of each and every one of them, and I couldn't have wished for better friends throughout college.

But to the graduates I have a few requests.

1. Please remember that though you are stressed about the real world and many cannot understand what that means, we still love you and are trying to help.

2. We know that you have done college for some time now, even if you are graduating early, but it's not over yet; please give us these last few weeks. We're going to miss you a lot. You can check out on school, but checking out on us is just painful and annoying

3. Remember us when you're gone; it's hard going from seeing you every day to not seeing you for weeks. Please text us; we can have Skype dates constantly. Please just remember us!

We're not leaving school just yet, and we'll still have to do all of the things you're leaving behind. We're not in the "checkout" mindset, and all we want is to hang out with our friends. I'm sorry you're worried, but you're gonna kick ass in the real world, and I'll always be here for you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
