For many, last week was the first round of exams. For others, exams are quickly coming up.
Exams can be stressful and life, in general, can be stressful.
Some types of stress, known as eustress, are beneficial. But, if you’re like me, most of the stress you experience is distress, which is not.
I’m no expert when it comes to de-stressing. In fact, when I take exams, I easily find myself stressing about the time limit, or the types of problems, or my performance, etc.
I’m learning how to de-stress and thought I’d share with you the tips that I've been using.
1. Be Prepared
Actually knowing the content will make you feel confident and will clearly increase your chances of doing well.
2. Study In Advance
This goes along with being prepared. While there’s a good chance we’ve all been there, I don’t see the point in cramming. Spaced studying beats massed practice, and sleep is important. Start studying well in advance so you don’t have to make the “should I sleep or study?” decision. Before the night of your exam, know when enough is enough so you can be well rested.
3. Listen To Music
I wouldn’t recommend it while you study (it’s distracting), but it’s helpful when you’re stressed out. I listen to some of my favorite records or turn on the radio to take my mind off of my stressors.
4. Breathe
When we’re stressed we can feel the physiological effects of stress, including shortness of breath. Taking a deep breath can be helpful in combating this.
5. Know Yourself
Different things work for different people. Figure out what you enjoy when it comes to relaxing and de-stressing. Some people love exercise, some love drawing, etc.
