I don't know about you, but it's about a month into the semester and I've already been given quite a few exams and quizzes. Not to mention, midterms are approaching quickly. If you aren't the strongest of test takers (like myself), exams could cause you a lot of stress. Although study sessions are helpful, other things do affect your test taking ability. Contrary to popular belief, staying up all night the day before a big test with cups of coffee and lack of sleep isn't going to make you perform at your very best. Here is a list of 5 things that will help you ace those exams!

1. SLEEP!

Don't let the stress of wanting an A in your class take away from a normal sleep schedule. On the night before an exam, put your phone down early, lay in bed and just relax. Letting your mind unwind and body recharge is crucial to doing well when it's time to take your test.

2. Socialize

Yes, you heard me right. Take some time out of your week to sit around with your friends and grab some food, or just talk! Letting your mind take a break from trying to remember all of those facts will make it less stressful to get it all done. Plus, if you are stressed, you can vent to friends and get it off of your chest, instead of bottling it up and freaking yourself out.

3. Exercise

Working out is a great distraction and stress reliever. When you think you've just about had it, change into some workout gear and hit the gym. Even doing only 30 minutes of cardio can let you work out your anxieties and give your body a boost of energy. Rigorous exercise releases endorphins in your brain, causing you to feel happier, have a pep in your step and be ready to sit down and hit those books again.

4. Eat Well

When people get stressed, many turn to stress eating. We all do it; we have pages of notes to review and chapters to read, so we grab some fries and plow through it. In the days before the exam, try to eat not only healthy food, but maintain a well-balanced diet. Eating well will make you feel better about yourself, give your body more clean energy to run on, and that will make you a better test taker. After your exam is over, then you can go treat yourself.

5. Be Confident

Whether you took the advice above or not, studied for 10 hours or none, go into the exam room with a positive attitude. Telling yourself you can get a good grade on a test will put you in a better mindset than telling yourself you will fail. You probably know more than you think, so don't put yourself down.

Best of luck on all of your exams!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
