A Goodbye To Freshman Year

Between the ups and downs, this was definitely the most memorable year so far, and I’ll miss it.

A Goodbye To Freshman Year
Nicki Lenkel

As the spring semester is coming to an end, I’ve been thinking back on everything I’ve gotten to do in the past 8-ish months. I have had so many unique and amazing experiences, and some… not so amazing experiences, but overall, I wouldn’t trade this year for the world. The end of the school year is bittersweet. Though I’m excited to go back home and see my friends and family (and my pets), I know I’m going to miss all the friends I made this year like crazy.

While I’m wishing a hateful goodbye to studying for exams, spending hours doing homework (whyyyyy?), homesickness, or my dreaded 8AM classes (...zzz...), there are countless things that I will miss so dearly.

Goodbye to being able to hang out with my friends at almost any hour of any day. It’ll be hard to go the next couple months without having you guys across the hall or in the building a two minute walk away from me.

Goodbye to random late night food runs to all of our favorite places. I don’t know how I’m going to survive months without going to Krispy Kreme, I really don’t. Thanks for helping me kill my cravings and making every off-campus trip exciting.

Goodbye to not being judged for taking naps as often as possible. Apparently in the real world it’s not appropriate to take naps all day? Weird. My family just doesn’t understand. Shout out to my friends for accepting and encouraging my napping habits.

Goodbye to our group trips to the beach, Disney, or even just to Walmart. Everything is better with friends, so thanks for helping me make some of the best memories of my life this year.

Goodbye to my beautiful campus. I know we all like to complain about how loud the lawn mowers are, or how old some of the buildings are, but overall, I truly go to a gorgeous (and very snapchat-worthy) school.

And of course, goodbye to all of the people who have helped make this year so incredible. More than anything, I’ll miss the people who were strangers a year ago, and now know me better than I know myself. I know I’ve definitely made friends this year that I will love forever.

I am so ready for summer, but I am not so ready to let go of freshman year. Thanks to everyone who’s helped me make this nerve-wracking first year away at college so much fun. I’m so thankful for everything that’s happened this year (even the numerous mental breakdowns—they’ve made me stronger and wiser). I truly can’t wait to see what sophomore year will bring.

So goodbye to the incredibly memorable freshman year, thanks for the memories.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
