It's Hard To Earn Good Grades When Your Professors Care Less Than You Do

Throughout high school and my college career so far, I've been a pretty good student.

I've put in the time and effort to get nearly all As every semester. But I've only recently realized why it's harder for me to make good grades in some classes. I'm not going to complain about how hard college courses are or how much homework I have. Yes, college classes are challenging, and often tiring, but there are other factors that affect your ability to finish the semester with a solid grade.

If your professor is lousy and doesn't care about the class, how can you?

I'd like to preface this argument by saying I don't think all professors are lousy. I've had some amazing professors throughout college that have really inspired me and taught me so much. The majority of professors do care, and often more than most of their students. This article isn't about those professors; it's about those who could care less about their students or what they're teaching.

Disclaimer: this article doesn't make me a "nerd."

There's nothing wrong with being a nerd (it just means you're passionate), but my argument can span all university departments. Everyone who pays for their education should be getting the most out of their money, especially when it comes to what they're getting out of their classes. I'm making this argument for every college student so that every college student gets the best out of their experience.

I think the biggest reason lousy professors make it hard for students is because if their lack of motivation.

If the teacher is not motivated for you to learn the subject, then how can you be motivated for the same thing? It's nearly impossible. I find that I get the highest grades in classes where professors are dedicated to each student's success; professors that truly care.

Now the "lousy professor" excuse is definitely a popular argument in the bad grades community, don't get me wrong. People always give excuses for their terrible grades and it usually involves blaming the professor outright. But I'm not just making an excuse. There are definitely professors who just don't care about their students.

Here's why I have the problem with them: students at UNC Charlotte (and other universities, too) pay way too much money to have to deal with lazy profs. If we're putting thousands of dollars a year into a school, we shouldn't have run-ins with these kinds of people.

Personally, I try to surround myself with motivated people. Motivated people keep me motivated, and lousy people certainly don't.

I just think it's something to consider. I think universities might want to be more selective about who they hire. Then again, there's never enough people to teach. Maybe there's no solution. But if you're someone who cares about your education, I recommend going to Rate My Professor and doing your research before signing up for classes next semester.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
