With the Golden Globes so close, award season has officially begun. This year will shape up to be a very different year with far more diversity and talent and the Golden Globes will gauge the feeling among the film community.
The Golden Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press, which is significant in foreshadowing the results of other award ceremonies because unlike most other awards excluding the BAFTA's (British American Film and Television Awards) the Golden Globes will be voted on by a foreign audience. Many independent films that have a limited release in the United States will have a very small presence globally. In the Golden Globes, small budget independent films are less likely to be nominated and less likely to win. Although the same films will fare far better with an American voter base.
Expect to see the big budget films to shine like La La Land and Fences and independent films like Moonlight to fall to the wayside. The Golden Globes has never been a great indicator for the Oscars, but the Golden Globes always is a good time and exposes some truly great cinema.
